I can provide the pronunciation of all except Iren Dabasu. Would this
be sufficient?

Clarification of Question by marzook-ga on 08 May 2005 13:25 PDT
yes, that would be fine. fp-ga has kindly given me a starting point on that one.

I realize now that I also don't have the pronunciation of El-Bawitty.
However, I do have information like fp's information on Iren Dabasu.
El-Bawitty in Bahariya Oasis is better known as El Bawiti. "Other
Names: Bawiti,Al Baw???,Baw?ti,El Bawiti,El Bawîti."

"Egypt's Hidden Tombs Revealed," by Zahi Hawass
National Geographic.com
http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/data/2001/09/01/html/ft_20010901.2.html

"Al Bawiti, Egypt Page"
Falling Rain Genomics, Inc.: Global Gazetteer Version 2.1
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/EG/8/Al_Bawiti.html

If this information is sufficient for El-Bawitty, then I'd be happy to
post pronunciations for the other place names.

My copy of the other names for El Bawiti didn't come out well. You
can see the list of names on the "Al Bawiti, Egypt Page" that I cited.

Hello marzook,

The following pages contain pronunciations for these places names in
your list. For the Infoplease pages, you should also consult
Infoplease's "Key to Pronunciation Symbols" at
http://www.infoplease.com/pronkey.html.

Bahariya (in Egypt) = bä"här?'u

"Bahariya"
Infoplease
http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/world/A0805754.html

Tel el Amarna (in Egypt) = tel el ämär'nä

"Tell el Amarna"
Infoplease
http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0848096.html

Uaxactun (Mexico) = wash-ak-toon

"Uaxactun"
Answers.com
http://www.answers.com/Uaxactun

Yaxchillan (Mexico) = yäs"ch?-län', yäsh"-

"Yaxchilán"
Infoplease

Canea Gate (on Crete) = ku-n?'u

"Canea"
Infoplease

I didn't find a pronunciation of das Ahenerbe online. However, I
lived in Germany for more than a year, and have experience pronouncing
German. Using Infoplease's "Key to Pronunciation Symbols," the
pronunciation is:

das Ahnenerbe (SS archeology unit) = däs ä'nun-âr'bu

Incidentally, I found that sites besides Answers.com and Infoplease
that are good for pronunciations are FactMonster

If you can't see any of the symbols I've written in the
pronunciations, you can check the relevant page I've cited. (For
example, you may see a box in my answer instead of a long e.)

If the pronunciations appear garbled, please let me know so that I may
work on a spelling that looks right on your screen.

i find the info please very difficult to interpret. for instance, they
have letters, like the final u in bahariya in italics with no
explaination as to what that means. i much prefer answers.com
phoenetic spelling. could you please, at least, give me a phoenetic on
das Ahnenerbe >without< using the info please coding. i am trying to
decifer the others.
thank you.

thanks for the web sites. if anyone can confrim that i am interpreting
the pronunciation key correctly, i'd sure appreciate it. i have to
send these pronunciations via email, so i can't use all the symbols.
Bahariya = bah-har-ee-uh
Tel -El-Amarna = Tell el are-mar-nah
Uaxactun = Wash-ak-toon
Yaxchillan = yähs-cheech-lahn
Canea Gate = kah-knee-ah
Ahnenerbe = ah-nun-ayr-buh

Clarification of Answer by justaskscott-ga on 08 May 2005 18:02 PDT
I'd correct them to read:

Bahariya = BAH-hah-ree-uh
Tel -El-Amarna = tell el ah-MAR-nah
Uaxactun = wash-ak-toon
Yaxchillan = YAHS-chee-lahn or YASH-chee-lahn
Canea Gate = kuh-NEE-uh
Ahnenerbe = AH-nuhn-AIR-buh (or, if you think it looks better, AH-nin-AIR-buh)

Capital letters indicate the most stressed syllables.

There seem to be several ways of how to write (to transcribe) "Iren Dabasu":

"Yeh-lieh-ta-pa-sha,Ereen,Yu-lin-ta-pa-su,Erh-lien,Erlin,P'ang-pei,Iren
Dabasu,Iren,Erlyan',I-lin-ta-pu-su,Erh-lien-hao-t'e,Erh-lien-hao-t'e-shih,I-lin-tu-pa-su"
