This may vary depending on the browser you are using, but
chances are you're using Internet Explorer or a browser
based on IE. This may also work on other browsers, but,
if it doesn't work on your setup, just come back here
with a Clarification, and I'll find out what will work
for you.
Go to Google or any other search site you use. When you
left-click once or twice in the empty search box, a list
of previous searches appears, complete with scroll bar.
Now, you can highlight the very first entry with your
cursor. If you want to delete only that entry, or any
other entry you highlight, just click on the Delete
key on your keyboard (not the backspace key, which you
might use to delete a letter or two in a word, but the
Delete key).
If you want to delete all the entries quickly, you can
just highlight the very first one, and then hold the
Delete key down, instead of releasing it after it
deletes one entry. This will rapidly scroll down
through the entire list, deleting as it goes.
If you want to be more selective, you can use the scroll
bar (easier to navigate) or move the cursor to the bottom
of the list to scroll to lower entries. Yet another way to
navigate the list is to leave the cursor in the search box
when the list appears. Then use the Down and Up scroll keys
on your keyboard to navigate through the list. Then just
select the specific entries you want to remove, and tap on
the Delete key to remove them.

Thank you for getting back to me so soon.
However your answer does not work. I go to google, as you said, then
hit enter and all the past sites are displayed in the search box. The
first one is highlighted and then I hit delete. It does not go away.
Did I not read your answer correctly?????

I use Mozilla. So I just called Yahoo and they said all options are
set correctly. However previous sites still display. We went to IE
and brought up Yahoo, the previous sites were not listed. Yahoo
thinks its a problem w/Mozilla. Do you think it is?

Don't panic...I'm working on it. I use Mozilla for some things,
and mine is set not to preserve the search box history, so I
need to set it to do so, and then see what can be done.

Okay, I've investigated Mozilla. My version, 1.6 has never
accumulated a search history, on Google, or Yahoo, or any
other search engine. Nor do I see a means for configuring
it to do so. What I did find was a post requesting the
addition of such a feature:
"I'm trying to retrace a browsing-path I made two to four
days ago. History isn't helpful here, as I'm looking for
paths that I took through Google. So, I realized something.
A Google Search History extension for Mozilla or Firefox
would be a huge help. But something far more than IE's
pathetic little dropdown."

Then I read your Clarification, and I wonder if you're
talking about search history, or URL history, as you say:
"...previous sites still display. We went to IE and
brought up Yahoo, the previous sites were not listed."
If you're talking about search history, I would expect
that you'd say "previous searches still display".
So, are you talking about search history - the terms in
the Google search box, or URL history - the site addresses
in the browser address bar?
I also share jackblackburn-ga's confusion about hitting
'Enter'. I never mentioned that, and hitting Enter while
the cursor is in the Google search box will simply reload
the page. You need to click once or twice (in IE, anyway)
in the search box to generate a drop-down box containing
all previous search entries. You then need to move the
cursor out of the (still empty) search box and onto one
of the previous search entries, prior to hitting Delete.
Short of posting a screen shot of exactly what you're
talking about, I need you to be extremely and accurately
specific about what you're describing. I have nothing
else to work with, so the resolution of the problem will
depend entirely on your ability to describe it precisely.

Success! I feel so dumb - the answer was in the options box in
Mozilla. Thanks for your time.

If it was in Mozilla options, it must have been the
location bar, or address bar you needed to clear.
Glad to hear the situation is resolved.
