where's a good place to stop and take a hike during the drive between
nyc & washington dc?

I may not be as rustic as you are.
I would zip into Phily on route 30 and take good walk in Fairmont
Park, Boathouse Row, the Schulkyl River (won't bother to check
spelling), and if it rains, the Art Museum.
