Hi...

I'm trying to create a video on my PC in .avi format.

While I *do* achieve to make the video (screen captures
using Camtasia), for some reason the resulting files are
huuuge.

I have seen other videos that others create online and
I would say that mine end up being 10 times bigger in
file size.

For example, a really simple 60-second video that would
normally end up at 1 megabyte, ends up being 11 megas.
And I'm not even recording the entire screen!

This has happened both on my desktop PC and on a Laptop
I just bought. So, I suppose I'm doing something
fundamentally wrong.

Maybe there's some setting that compresses the videos
generated?

Thanks for reading this question and I'm looking forward
to hearing from you.

I should make a clarification:

I want the video to be viewed online in a browser.

I'm very comfortable with the producing aspect of a .swf file.

The only issue is that the initial .avi is too big.

Thanks

Ok here's what what you can do. The reason the files that camtasia is
creating are so huge is because it's having to do them in realtime and
so it doesn't want to take up the cpu in order to compress or make the
files a more compressed size. Go to divx.com and download divx which
can be found here http://www.divx.com/divx/download/ install it on
your computer when it's installed download virtualdub found here
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.5.10.zip?download
it should be in a zip file so extract it to a folder and then
doubleclick virtualdub.exe when you get in click open video file and
select the file you wish to convert. Click open now go to the video
tab. Make sure it's set to full processing. Now go under Video -
Compression. Select Divx 5.2.1 Codec. I assume there is no audio to
this. Please let me know if there is. So you can try and click file-
save as avi or just hit F7 select where and what you wanna save it and
hit save. It'll take some time depending on how long your clip is.
When it's done you can play it back to see if it's the quality you
wanted if it's too low a quality or too high a size then go back and
under video - compression and then click the configure button try
adjusting the values until you get something you like and then follow
the previous steps. That's all there is to it.

Thanks triwav....

As a matter of fact, yes, there is audio too involved.

As I record the screen, I "narrate" the process as well.

Just wanted to make sure that this doesn't require
a whole different process...

Thanks again for your answer, I appreciate it...

Actually, the only part you are missing is using the Camtasia Producer
after you have used the Player to record your production. There is a
pack and show option that compresses the file and makes it executable.
you can see an example on my website at:
http://home.hawaii.rr.com/cmekauai/TIPS/Spreadsheet/Excel2000XP.htm

As you will also see I have put additional instructions for users to
get the full experience. It compresses the file nicely. KauaiDawn
