Suddenly my taskbar icons no longer display information about the
minimized web page but show a symbol which looks like a step ladder on
its side. How do I fix this?

Are you using Windows 98? Sounds like you're low on RAM.
Reboot and it should be fine. Let me know.

using WINXP with 500 MB RAM...another point which might help: this
only occurs while Iam logged in but not with other users of the
computer
