Question ID: 520048
If you were in the market to buy a DVD, TV, Computer and Stereo, how
would you approach it? I would like a flat panel (LCD) TV, but I am
worried prices are going down rapidly and I will miss out on that
opportunity. The computer would be solely for internet, as I have a
work computer to do everything else. I am not huge into sound quality
for the stereo, I just want 'nice'.
The question is: do I buy all 4 of these things in one computer? Dell
sells a PC that does everything, and also has a 26'' LCD(that would
double as the monitor as well) all for $2800. Or, I could buy a
separate DVD/Stereo ($300), nice TV ($500) - but not LCD, and simple
computer ($400) that does internet and MP3 stuff. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kate

My advise:
It depends how much you have place in your living room.
If I am you, I will buy nice Barebone computer with TV out and DVD -
into small living room + big TV (not LCD, because the price of big
LCD/20" and more/ will be rapidly falling). IT could cost max 1400$.
If I have a big living room, IŽll buy the same, because quality
barebone computer looks great in it.

Then I save 1400 $ and after 1-2 year I can buy one huge 40" LCD (I
presume prices will be falling rapidly) and second barebone computer
for my parents or for me and the old system I give to them :)

You should spend less on the computer. There will be no benefit to get
the high end Dell you describe. Using a 26" LCD as a monitor is
probably too expensive.

If you have room, the most impressive thing you can do is go with a
projector (like a digital movie projector). I bought the inFocus 4805
for about $1,100 at CostCo and it projects a 96" high definition
picture with outstanding quality. You only need to have enough room on
a blank wall. Prices will probably drop here as well but not nearly to
the same degree as with an LCD or Plasma display.

For the $2800 you would pay for the Dell you could get a projector
($1,100), low end computer ($500) and Home Theater in a Box system
($500). You will be blown away by the quality.
