What were the national average gasoline prices from 1930 to the present.
I began driving in 1936.

I found a great source for you at the U.S. Department of Energy: 

Historical Gas Prices, 1919 - 2004

As you can see, from the table under the graph, the annual average
price is listed in both absolute dollars at the time and relative cost
in "2005 dollars". The interesting thing is that although prices are
high right now (around $2.00/gallon), they were relatively higher in
much of the past.
