I added CD-RW to my computer and now my sound does not work
consistently. I downloaded all the proper drivers for sound-sometimes
my sound works for a short while and other times it does not work at
all. What is the problem?

jack...

Check the connections of the cables plugged into your soundcard.
A lot of times, during installation of new hardware, these cables
get loosened, resulting in the intermittent sound you described.

Let me know if this helps...

Yes, I checked all the wires and connections. Some times I turn on my
computer and I have sound for a while and then the sound just stops
and usually does not come back on until the next time I turn on my
computer.Excuse me if I expained right but my sound does not come and
go like a loose connection. It makes sound somedays when I turn it on
and then somedays does not come on at all. I even updated my driver
for my sound and still nothing changed. Thank you

may seem silly, but you might want to try different speakers. the
speakers might be the problem.

Hi jackp,

The first step in troubleshooting is narrowing the possible causes.
First start by removing the CD-RW, since you said that the problem
started after you installed it. Does your sound card function properly
without it? If so, we can then further work on the problem, knowing
the CD-RW is the problem.

Neutron Coding.

go to the device manager and check for any conflict(yellow or red icon
on device) .. your problem arises due to loose PCI card or device
conflict

You may want to scan your machine for malicious software. I have seen
adware/spyware disable drivers in an off and on pattern just like you
describe.

if your system is running both onboard sound and onboard LAN.
reinstall/update the network drivers, or even disable onboard LAN from
bios. then see if the sound cuts out. my system once lost sound then
crashed because on onboard LAN.
