Hello Shikibobo-ga,

Health care and education are primary drivers of Birmingham?s economy.
The finance and insurance industry is also strong, and automotive
manufacturing is a rapidly growing industry.

University of Alabama at Birmingham is the largest employer in the
Birmingham metropolitan area with close to 19,000 employees followed
by Baptist Health System and BellSouth Telecommunications, each with
approximately 6000 employees.

The University Of Alabama At Birmingham
General Information about Birmingham
http://www.uab.edu/uabbio/bham.htm
?Health care and education have replaced other types of industry as
Birmingham's economic base, and UAB is now the city's leading
employer. Birmingham's economy is fully diversified, with rapid growth
in service; financial, insurance and real estate; wholesale trade;
construction; and research fields.?

The University Of Alabama At Birmingham
Fast Facts
http://main.uab.edu/show.asp?durki=66418
?All told, UAB?s overall economic impact on the Birmingham MSA in 2001
reached nearly $2.5 billion ? a 22.5 percent increase in just three
years.

- A large portion of that total comes from spending by 16,000
employees coming to campus to work and teach, almost 16,000 students
coming to campus to learn, and untold thousands visiting UAB?s
hospitals, clinics, performing arts center, athletic events and other
public venues.

- As the largest employer in the state, UAB generates 53,018 full-time
equivalent jobs both within the university and the community. That
means 1 of every 10 jobs in the Birmingham area (and 3 of 100 in
Alabama, incidentally) are here because of UAB.?

automotive industry hub in the U.S., Birmingham is really on an

Traditional industries key to the economy

?Many of the industries driving Birmingham's economy these days
weren't around 50 years ago. Those include automotive manufacturing
and many of the health care businesses that have sprouted up as the
University of Alabama at Birmingham grew into a medical colossus that
attracts patients, doctors and researchers from all corners of the
earth. Auto manufacturing alone has been a huge factor in adding jobs
in Alabama and Jefferson County. Nearly 40,000 people work in the
industry now, at the three assembly factories - Mercedes-Benz in
Vance, Hyundai in Montgomery and Honda in Lincoln - and their
suppliers.?
