Can a removable drive be used in different computers without receiving
this error message?

There is an article on this behaviour with Windows 2000. Is that your
OS? You could try removing all access control by going into the top
level of each folder and setting the permissions to Everyone Full
control on them and there sub levels. For info on this ask me if you
get stuck. Aso see the article.
