How can I uninstall Wintective? I downloaded a trial version. It is
has disappeared from view - when I click on the icon (it is NOT
running in invisible mode as this is blocked on the trial version and
the icons are still visible) the program runs in the background but
denies me access to turn it off. I have tried uninstall but it
doesn't show up in the Add/Remove programs. I have tried System
restore and it is still there.

I downloaded and installed it to solve the problem.

First, I learned that there are two versions out there.
One is a zipped file that simply contains the program
files, and you can place them where you want and delete
them with ease, as this type of install makes no changes
to the registry.

From your description, it sounds like you used the second
type of install, which is a zipped file which contains an
actual setup.exe file, and does make changes to the registry.

I spotted one such change in the unzipped install files
which is a file which, on installation, makes the install
unavailable in the Add/Remove Programs section, named:
hide_wintective_from_add-remove-program_list.reg
I renamed this file so the setup program wouldn't find it,
and after install, it showed up in the Add/Remove area.

Inside that file is the uninstall string:
C:\WINNT\st6unst.exe -n "C:\Program Files\wintective\ST6UNST.LOG"

Assuming you did a standard install, without changing the
default installation directory in Program Files, you can
simply copy the string above and paste it into a CMD or
DOS window (depending on your operating system), and hit
Enter. This will bring up the uninstall program. When it
asks you if you want to remove the "shared" wintective.dll,
click Yes, as no other program uses this file.

First, you'll need to stop the active program, so, again,
depending on your system, r-click on the taskbar and select
Task Manager, or hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on Task Mgr.
Or, go to Start -> Run, type in taskmgr.exe and hit OK.
Go to the Processes tab and scroll down til you see the
entry for wintective, near the bottom. Highlight it and
click on End Process.

Once the program is stopped, go to Start -> Run and type
in CMD, or, depending on your system, open up a DOS prompt.
Then copy and paste (with a right-click) the string:

C:\WINNT\st6unst.exe -n "C:\Program Files\wintective\ST6UNST.LOG"

Hit Enter, and the uninstall should begin.

If you installed the program on a different drive, or in
a different directory, you'll have to make adjustments to
the uninstall string. I can help with that, if this is so.

P.S. I never even *saw* the icon you referred to!

P.P.S.

The string I gave you is for Windows 2000. For other
operating systems, like Windows XP, the string would be:
C:\Windows\st6unst.exe -n "C:\Program Files\wintective\ST6UNST.LOG"

Thanks for you quick response.

I have tried what you suggested and am getting:
'C:\Windows\st6uninst.exe' is not recognised as an internal or
external command, operable program or batch file.

Any suggestions?

I am using Windows XP with service pack2 installed.

And I can't find anything about Wintective in Program files.

James...

Okay, then I'll need you to do some footwork for me.

First, do you recall - did you install it by clicking
on a setup.exe file, or did you just unzip the program
files and place them somewhere?

Second, I need you to do a search in Windows Explorer
and tell me the location of the following files (if
they exist) on your system:

wintective.exe

ST6UNST.LOG (should be in the same location as above)

wintective.dll

st6unst.exe

Thanks...

OK ...

I downloaded the zip file.

A search for wintective.exe yields two results:
wintective in My Documents and
wintective in C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB

wintective.dll yields C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB

ST6UNST.LOG yields nothing. There are no results to display (even
though I included search hidden files in the search, and checked and
double checked my spelling).

st6unst.exe yields C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB

Thanks for your patience :-)

You said:

"I downloaded the zip file."
Both versions are zip files. One contains only the basic
program files, and is named wintective_demo.zip. The other
contains a setup.exe file for a full install, and is named
wintective_demo_install.zip. The second version is the only
one that contains wintective.CAB, so you must have used
that one, however, a full install creates the installation
log, ST6UNST.LOG, and the uninstall executable, st6unst.exe,
both of which you say are missing. Without them, it's not
possible to use the automated uninstall.

The lack of the existence of the log makes it unclear
whether you actually used the automated install, so
it's uncertain whether any changes were made to your
registry.

So, we may have to do this the hard way:

First, you'll need to stop the active program, so, again,
depending on your system, r-click on the taskbar and select
Task Manager, or hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on Task Mgr.
Or, go to Start -> Run, type in taskmgr.exe and hit OK.
Go to the Processes tab and scroll down til you see the
entry for wintective, near the bottom. Highlight it and
click on End Process.

Then, redo the searches you did before:

"A search for wintective.exe yields two results:
 wintective in My Documents and
 wintective in C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
 Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB"

Delete those in the search window, by right-clicking
and selecting Delete. But don't do that yet, until we
clarify something later in this discussion.

"wintective.dll yields C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
 Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB"

This bit is confusing, because a search for wintective.dll
should *not* return the result of wintective.CAB, unless you
entered the file name in the "Containing text:" box in the
search window. Since wintective.CAB contains *all* the program
files, it would show up in such a search, but I'd suggest you
re-run all the searches I gave you before, making sure you
enter the filenames in the box that says "Search for files or
folders named:". What's more confusing is that wintective.CAB
is the only result returned in the search for wintective.dll
since you've said the program is running, and it can't run
without a copy of wintective.dll outside of the CAB file.
So there *has* to be another copy of it somewhere.

"ST6UNST.LOG yields nothing. There are no results to display (even
though I included search hidden files in the search, and checked and
 double checked my spelling)."

Again, you might make sure you're entering the filename in
the "Search for files or folders named:" box. If you succeed
in locating a copy of this file, let me know, and we may be
able to proceed with the automatic uninstall, which is why
I asked you not to begin hand-deleting the files yet.

"st6unst.exe yields C:\Documents and Settings\Connections\Local
 Settings\Temp\Temporary HandyBits Zip&Go Files\tmp1\wintective.CAB"

Same as above. If you ran the automated install, there is
a copy of this somewhere other than inside wintective.CAB.

So please redo all the searches, taking care to enter the
filenames in the "Search for files or folders named:" box.

Hello again ...

I downloaded the full install version 2.1mb. I unzipped it and then
clicked on the setup file.

The good news ...
I have noticed that since I last stopped the program using the Task
Manager, it no longer automatically starts up and no longer runs in
the background unless I click the icons to start it - so at least it
is no longer running and I can delete the log files that it produced.

The bad news ...
I re-ran the searches and made sure that I searched for the file names
only and not the text within the file options. I selected search all
files and folders including hidden ones. The results: *exactly* the
same as before!

I sense we are hitting a brick wall here. It feels to me as if
something went wrong with the installation, but I am just guessing.

I do appreciate the trouble you have taken and I can see that your
answer would have worked if things had been straightforward.

Best wishes.

James

I thought we were still working on the answer...but I'm glad
you're satisfied. It does seem like it was an odd installation.

Short of the uninstall executable and log, I was going to
suggest you simply delete all the program's files that you
found in your searches. If you want to be tidy, you can also
open up your registry and delete any keys with "wintective"
in them.

Thanks for the tip!
