My fiance is Canadian. I am American. We are getting married on September 3, 2005. The wedding ceremony is scheduled to occur in Massachusetts. I read somewhere that all he (the Canadian) will need to be marriedto me in MA is a birth certificate and a picture ID. I read elsewhere that he needs to get a fiance visa just to be here for the ceremony. Which is correct? We plan to reside in Canada and have already started that application process. We just want to be clear on what is needed for us to just be married in the US. |

Here are a few websites that may help: One is Mass. marriage and the other is Canadian Marriage. http://www.glad.org/marriage/howtogetmarried.html#Who_can_marry http://www.glad.org/marriage/canadianmarriage_faq.shtml Massachusetts does not have a residency requirement for marriage, BUT one old, local law -- dating from 1913 and never the subject of any published Massachusetts court opinion (although it was mentioned in a footnote in the concurring opinion in the Goodridge case) -- says that non-residents may not marry in Massachusetts if their marriage would be ?void? in their home state. |
