Dear Monroe22,

Thank you for kindly accepting my comments as the formal answer to
your question. I am reposting the information below to make it
official.

Best regards,

In 2003 Natural Gas generated 17% of total energy production.

?Natural gas is expected to have the largest increase in its share of
total electricity generation, from 17 percent in 2003 to 20 percent in
2010 and 24 percent in 2025, and by 2010 it is expected to overtake
nuclear power as the second-largest source of electricity production.?

16 percent in 2003
?The natural gas share of electricity generation (including generation
in the end-use sectors) is projected to increase from 16 percent in
2003 to 24 percent in 2025. The share from coal is projected to
decrease from 51 percent in 2003 to 50 percent in 2025. AEO2005
projects that 87 gigawatts of new coal-fired generating capacity will
be constructed between 2004 and 2025 (compared with 112 gigawatts in
AEO2004).?

16% in 2000
?Natural gas, in addition to being burned to heat water for steam, can
also be burned to produce hot combustion gases that pass directly
through a turbine, spinning the blades of the turbine to generate
electricity. Gas turbines are commonly used when electricity utility
usage is in high demand. In 2000, 16% of the nation's electricity was
fueled by natural gas.?

1999 ? 11%
"Currently the nation burns about 3.5 trillion cubic feet of natural
gas to generate about 11 percent of the country's electric power."

Following are two quotes from authoritative sources. While they
appear to be directly relevant to your question, they may not be
current and/or comprehensive enough for your purposes:

"CCGTs [Combined Cycle Gas Turbines] now generate less than 3 percent
of U.S. electricity. Yet because of their recent improvements in
capital and operating costs and ultra-low emissions, they account for
88 percent of planned power plants."

"Natural gas-fired facilities are projected to generate about 20
percent of North America?s electricity by 2009, compared to just 8
percent in 1991. Most new electricity generation additions over this
period will be natural-gas-fired gas-turbine systems."
