I would like some evidence of a dispute involving Ignace Ephrussi (of
the famous Ephrussi Family) between 1829 and 1908? Ideally, I would
like a newspaper account of a pistol duel but I will accept detailed
biographical info. (other than purely genealogical stuff) of his life
from a European periodical. A large tip for the definitive, e.g. a
Paris newspaper account of a duel from one of the popular 19th c.
Paris newspapers e.g. Le Figaro, La Gaulois, Le Petit Journal, La
Presse, preferrably summarized in English.

A note to my colleagues: When searching for information on Ignace
Ephrussi, also use "Ignaz Ephrussi", "Ignaz von Ephrussi" and "Ignaz
Ritter von Ephrussi", since he was knighted in Austria.

I have rather late come across this exchange on the Ephrussis. I am a
descendant -- through my paternal grandmother Elizabeth Ephrussi --
from the Vienna side of the family and have recently been in Odessa
researching the family history. My grandmother's grandfather and
brother were both Ignaty/Ignaz Ephrussi but the one whose pistols you
found was undoubtedly her Paris-based cousin Ignaz son of Leon
Ephrussi and brother of the famous collector Charles Ephrussi
(reputedly a model for Proust's Charles Swann). I can tell you that
your Ignaz Ephrussi lost an eye in a fencing accident in 1882. There
is more if you are still interested! Have you sold the pistols?

I had considered Leon's son but there is some indication that the
pistols were made circa 1845--3 yrs. earlier than Ignace's birth--but
Devisme made pistols as late as 1860. The style seems to put them at
an earlier date though.

Although the uncle lived in Vienna he apparently frequented Paris as
evidenced by several letters, one which seems to refer to the uncle
rather than the nephew; and that he had stayed at "Wargemont" in Paris
(a Renoir work depicts a scene from there, painted during a visit in
1880's [not confirmed]).

An 1883 newspaper item refers to Ignace as a skilled fencer. [a
one-eyed-but-nevertheless-skilled fencer?] I saw no reference to an
accident. This would have been when the uncle was 53 and the nephew
34?

I do possess the pistols and their accoutrements. If you post an
address I'll send a pic of them. Interesting sidenote: While
researching this I came across an American newspaper account of the
Ephrussis and their somewhat limited role in "L'affair Dreyfus" that
forced the French Army to acknowledge (eventually) the forgeries that
convicted Dreyfus. Thanks for your post. I'll take any info you have
and I'll be glad to share what I've found.
