Hi, I'm writing a book that will include screenscreens of software applications and Web sites. I'd like to do the capture of the screenshots only once. What format would be best for me to save the screenshots and Web pages? I want to make sure the files are usable for print. I may also want to use the images on Web pages. Would .tiff be best? I'm guessing that .gif or .jpeg may not be high enough resolution. I'm on a PC. |

BMP - Bitmap is the native format JPG with no compression is just about the same - but more widely used |

Any lossless format will do. TIFF will be fine, PNG will be fine, BMP will be fine, they can get big, though. Don't use JPEG. Don't worry about the resolution, just don't scale the images, no matter what format you choose. |

I would also suggest to have the screen resolution set to highest setting prior to taking screen shot. That way the image will "have more dots" and provide a cleaner picture when printed. You will also want to tweak the screen profile to provide a high amount of contrast between screen elements. This is very important if images will be printed greyscale, Black and white, or dithered. If possible try to avoid any eccess images/icons but keep the screens default settings with out customisations. People will focus on content if the window screenshots show default layouts for programs / browsers and not get hung up of the "wierd" icon in browser toolbar. I personnally use PNG, but TIF will be just as good. |

Remember you may need copyright permission from the software manufacturer to include screenshots from their software in the book. Owain |
