I want to know which countries in the world use ANSI standard domestic
and industrial electricity meters.
I know most of North America does so, but what other territories use
the ANSI (socket) standard? |

Hello mswidget-ga,
I'm working on your question, and I'd like to ask for a bit of
clarification, please.
1. Is there a particular ANSI standard you have in mind, such as ANSI C12.20?
2. I'm not quite sure what you mean by ANSI (socket) standard...can you elaborate?
3. ANSI is an American standard-making organization, although you are
correct in noting that some areas in Canada have adopted several of
the ANSI metering standards. For the most part, what I'm seeing in
other countries are electricity meters that are certified as
complying-with, or exceeding, some of the ANSI standards. But I don't
see actual requirements to use ANSI standards outside of US/Canada.
Are you looking for just ANSI-equivalent meters in other countries?
Or is your question more about actual requirements in other countries?
Any additional information you can provide would be most helpful in
researching this question.
Thanks.

Hello Pafalafa
Yes, I had in mind ANSI C12.20. This standard allows for two mounting
arrangements: one is to fit into a 'socket' in the meter box (type
's')and the other is bottom connected (type 'a')
In practise, type a is hardly ever used, hence my reference to 'socket meters'.
My question is about which countries/areas have adopted the complete
ANSI standard, including the mounting arrangements. In terms of
performance, I believe there is little significant difference between
an ANSI meter and the main alternative, which is an IEC standard. But
you will appreciate that the difference in shape between an ANSI
socket meter (round) and an IEC wired in meter (square) has a quite
profound impact on the basic meter design!
So I guess I am looking for requirements in other countries to meter
their supplies specifically using a meter that complies with ANSI
C12.20 mechanical form.
Hope that helps. Please ask if you have any further questions

mswidget-ga,
Thanks for the extra information...it helped quite a bit.
Your original question asked which countries <<use>> ANSI standard
meters, and the answer seems to be quite a few of them. I'd be glad
to provide details if you think that would serve as an answer to your
question.
But your follow-up indicates you want to know who <<requires>> use of
ANSI standard meters. The answer here seems to be that -- as far as I
can tell thus far -- only the US and parts of Canada have such a
requirement.
I'm not terribly surprised at this, since ANSI is, after all, an
American standard-setting institution, and other countries tend to
follow more international protocols.
Like I said, other countries do make use of ANSI-type meters, but do
not require them to be used, and other types are routinely available
as well.
That said...what do you suggest as the best way to proceed on this question?

Thanks Pafalafa-ga
I think we will get there, by a process of iteration, if nothing else!
My purpose in answering this question is to allow me to identify
territories that we can operate in where we will compete with an
existing meter manufacturer with whom we have a commercial
relationship. This manufacturer sells ANSI S type meters to any
market which uses them.
So...I guess I do need to have an idea of which other countries 'use'
ANSI S type meters (and if you can tell me what is driving this use,
whether it is custom, particular product benefits from S type meters,
or legislative requirements, that would be helpful). I also need the
list of those countries where ANSI S type meters are a formal
requirement, and preferably, the legislation or instrument that
creates that formal requirement.
Does that help?
