I create multi-part documents with large chunks of text that it
would be helpful to separate. For example, I'd like to be able to
jump quickly (faster than by Ctrl-F for find) from the "who" to "why"
to "when" portions of my document.

At first, I thought of hyperlinking within a Word document. For
example, on the first page, I'd have 5 links: "who," what," etc. and
each of those would link to a place lower in the document. Even that
seems a little cumbersome, though, as I'd have to go to the top of the
document each time to use my link.

So, what I'm wondering is if I can create separate sheets within one
document like my Excel does. I'd love to just have little tabs on the
side (or bottom, whatever) of my screen with "who," "what," etc. on
them and within each tab there would be a separate document. One
click and I'd be to the other subpart of my document.

Can I do this? If so, what are the steps? (Using menu commands only,
please, not buttons.) (I am using MS-Word 2002, ver 10.2627.2625.)

Thanks!

Nothing fancy!

Just select your WHO, WHERE, etc... and apply Heading1 style to it
from the Style dropdown (probably says Normal right now).

Then, turn on your document map! You can turn that on with a toolbar
button. I use it all the time if I'm doing something as you describe.
You can see it demonstrated in a Word doc of Excel functions here:

You must enable macros before opening the file to "force" the document
map to automatically show, as I intended. However, you do NOT have to
put macros in your document to use the document map. It's just a
button on your toolbar to turn it on.
