Question ID: 522404
I would like to record Books on Tape, or Bible stories on tape. How
would I go about finding a part-time job doing this work? Would I be
able to do it from home? Are there any venues for this work in the
Central New York area. By Central New York, I mean within a 50 mile
radius of Syracuse.

Dear Purple Wizard,

Owain here is right in his remarks. Would you like me to give you a
list of such agencies, that might hire you?

Hello,

I've found 2 online agencies with job postings and that offer you a
page for demos and the like to get your voice out there. Would that
work for you as an answer?

Dear Purple Wizard,

Let me first discourage you (sorry...):
- Most voice-over jobs for narration are offered in NYC or in LA.
Agencies are more than not located in these places;
- Most voice-over/narration jobs require a studio, which you may not
find in rural central New York (unless you invest in having one at
home), but could - of course - find in towns in the center of the
State.

I am not *really* saying these two facts in order to discourage you,
but in fact, so that you'll know that it won't be easy, and will not
give up after the first or second "no".

Having said that, there are many agencies, and there are few websites
that may hire you to narrate Christian (or other) audio-books. Some of
the websites I listed offer you the opportunity to list yourself,
therefore be also available when a client searches through the
Internet.

Many theatrical (actors') agencies handle "voice over" work. Get the
yellow pages and start phoning.

As well as audio books, work can include radio and television
commercial voice-overs, and recordings for service announcements on
transport and safety systems, as well as telephone on-hold
announcements and information recordings.

Many people in this field do work from home - you will need a small
*soundproof* studio (low background noise is very important) and
broadcast quality microphone and recording equipment to CD and
Minidisc. Many people also have ISDN links so they can speak live into
a production studio elsewhere.

You might want to get some voluntary experience by recording for your
local talking newspaper for the blind.
