Question ID: 522518
I have set up a Windows Server 2003 machine at home - I'd like to set
it up to manage my email too, and then I won't have to pay an ISP any
more.

Exchange Server is frighteningly expensive when all I really want is a
POP3/SMTP server. I need to enable greylisting on it, and I need to be
able to set up some sort of spam filtering.

Any suggestions? Ideally I'd like a product that many other people are
using too, so that there'll be a good bit of newsgroup/forum support
for it on the internet.

I am willing to pay - say up to $100, though ideally a bit less.

Chris

Thanks for the suggestions so far - one thing I forgot to add is that
I'd be very keen for some sort of webmail interface to be integrated -
not sure if that is a normal feature for mail servers or not.

Some free/open source Java Email servers: http://crsemail.sourceforge.net/
http://www.ericdaugherty.com/java/mailserver/

Essentially, you need to have Java runtime, and DL one of these and
you get SMTP, POP3 right out of the box.

Although, I'd seriously want to point you to a Linux/FreeBSD complete solution.

This is a free comment. I am not a GA Researcher.

Oh, yeah, and I use http://ASSP.sourceforge.net in conjunction with
http://www.activestate.com/Products/Download/Download.plex?id=ActivePerl
to filter spam messages. It's pretty good.

Don't forget that you'll require an MX record for a domain, as well as
some sort of static IP address.

Mercury is a pretty good one, and free:
http://www.pmail.com/

The complimentary Pegasus email client is also good, although I
stopped using it in favour of Thunderbird because at the time Pegasus
didn't have spam filtering (it may now).

I believe both of my suggestions provide web email. At least, the
first one explicitly does. There doesn't seem to be a feature list for
the second one, but the sourceforge site indicates that it should have
web email.

My apologies, so they do - I am keen not to bother having to run Java
if I can possibly avoid it, to be honest; was after some sort of
native NT system. Many thanks though, I'll keep them on my list in
case I can't find one.

Based upon some other recent GA posts, as well as just email I've
received ... Eudora has a product, but its minimum price 25 users is
$350 http://www.eudora.com/worldmail/pricing.html.

"Other features include; a web-based email client, multi-level
administration privileges and tools for migrating from WorldMail 2,
OpenWave Post.Office, Ipswitch iMail and others."
Ipswitch Collaboration starts at around $1295.

Also, one might go to www.tucows.com and search for "Email Server" ...

Hi,

there are multiple solutions possible:

1. You may insall some freeware/shareware (something cheap) mail
server solution for Windows.

2. You may setup some UNIX based mail server solution. Look at
http://www.lifewithqmail.org/ for complete solution based on Qmail
UNIX mailserver which can be extended with variety of spam filtering,
listing and etc tools.

P.S. Webmail interface:

Typically this is not one of these thing which is implemented into
mail server itself. Typically there is the following architecture in
play:
1. There is mail server used to store and route mails.
2. There is web server which serves your web requestes.
3. There is web application running on the web server which performs
actions your need (browsing, reading, composing and etc). Web
application talks to mail server using some common protocols
(combination of POP3 and SMTP or combination of IMAP/SMTP or some
other less common but still usefull protocol like Microsoft's
Exchange-to-Outlook).

Windows Server 2003 comes with a POP3 Server and Windows Server
already had an SMTP server. It probably does not have a WebMail
interface.

http://www.zimbra.com/ seems nice although it won't run on in an m$ environment
