Question ID: 522752
I'm developing a new website and need some extensive research done
regarding cigarette prices by state and brand at a local 7 eleven or
gas station. I will be using geotargetting to list retail price in
their local state to compare to my prices.

The prices should be retail price on what the person pays per pack AFTER TAXES.

The cigarette brands are:
 MARLBORO
 CAMEL
 WINSTON
 BOND STREET
 LUCKY STRIKE
 VIRGINIA SLIMS
 PARLIAMENT
 KENT
 ROTHMANS

a price per brand is fine, doesn't have to be specifically kings, lights etc..

I would need them in a nicely readable format, preferably in excel.

I need all states and each brand per state. AGAIN The price SHOULD BE AFTER TAXES.

Thank you

Hi notr,

After several hours of research, I was able to locate the prices of
cigarettes by state. However, I was not able to locate any data for a
brand breakdown. The information I was able to find includes the
following (per state):

Cigarette Company Factory Price
Federal Cig. Tax
Distributor & Retailer Mark Ups
State Cig. Tax
State Sales Tax
Total Fed/StateTaxes
Final Retail Price

Would this information interest you?

Best regards,
Rainbow

Rainbow,

I was able to find the same information you found, I believe it was
from the tobacco free kids website. The prices listed on their chart
is way off and I need more details.

Regards,
Abby

Hello Abby,

I've found a list of state cigarette taxes for all states as of
December 2004. They range from a high of $2.46 a pack in Rhode
Island, to only three cents a pack in Kentucky. In addition, there
are general state sales taxes that apply to cigarettes, and these
range from about 0-7%. There's also a federal tax of 39 cents per
pack.

With that information, you should be able to get a pretty reasonable
range for the "street price" of cigarettes in different states, but
adding in the taxes on top of the base prices (which I don't have) for
individual brands.

Does that help you out at all?

Dear Notr,

While I can't help you with prices, you might want to read this article
about states chasing after online sellers of tobacco:

It may help you re-think selling cigarettes online without collecting taxes.

Just a thought.
