tiptemp-ga, Thanks for getting back to me. USEPA has two (fairly) easy-to-use databases that can search for facilities by name across a lot of EPA's programs, and return information about the company, including SIC codes. The first is here: http://www.epa.gov/echo/compliance_report.html Enforcement & Compliance History Online (ECHO) Enter the company (partial names are OK) in the "Facility Name" box. If the company is likely to have a lot of operations around the country, you may want to narrow things down to a particular state or zip code using the "Geographic Location" check-offs. To be on the safe side, also click on "Include Minor Facilities" way at the bottom of the page. Then click on search (back up near the top). If the company is in the database, it will return a search results page with the company listed in a clickable format. Click on the company name, and you'll get a full page of information on the firm, including SIC code (on the right, under "Facility Characteristics". The other database MAY be worth checking, if a company doesn't show up in ECHO, but be warned -- this system is often v-e-r-y s-l-o-w, and can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth. You can find it here: http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/fii/fii_query_java.html Envirofacts Facility Tables Enter a facility name as indicated, and click on 'search' near the page bottom, and then go get a cup of coffee. Same deal as before -- if its in the system, it will show up in results, and you can then click on it for a great deal of information, including both SIC and NAICS codes. Hope that does the trick. But before rating this answer, please let me know if there's anything else you need. Just post a Request for Clarification, and I'm at your service. Also, I'd be curious to know how this works out for you, so if you have a moment, please let me know. Thanks, pafalafa-ga search strategy -- Used existing bookmarks for facility databases. |

If you want the SIC, and possibly more information too, the following site may be of use: http://www.investorwords.com Once there, type in a business name in the search query, and then click on the appropriate link. If you have a ticker symbol, your task is even easier. Say, for example, you want to search Nortel Networks. The ticker symbol is NT. The general link for any stock, with ticker, is: http://www.investorwords.com/cgi-bin/stocksymbol.cgi?ticker= After the "=" you type the stock symbol, in this case NT. So, for example: http://www.investorwords.com/cgi-bin/stocksymbol.cgi?ticker=NT This will show you a company profile along with a listing of the company's SIC code. Note that the SIC has been superceded by the NAICS code. You can inter-convert between the two here: http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naicstab.htm The following site allows you to perform a SIC search by keywords. It doesn't quite give you the SIC by company name, but you may find it to be a useful supplement (perhaps as a tool for cross-referencing your SIC information obtained from the above site): http://www.osha.gov/pls/imis/sicsearch.html |
