Hello, I hope you can help me with this very frustrating problem that i'm havng with my ipod. Basically my ipod was working fine up until i used the "eject hardware device" icon in the bottom right hand corner of my pc to remove my ipod. It said that "it was now safe to remove your ipod" so i did. When i turned on my ipod to listen to it all of my songs and information are missing!!!!!!! When i go into the music folder it is like there is nothing there. I know that the songs are still on the ipod because in hard drive mode the ipod is still saying that 27gig is being used, which is correct. I don't know a lot about ipods but it seems like the script file pointing the ipod to the music folder is no longer there or is no longer operational or there is a problem with the id3 tags. This is driving me mad as i suspect that the solution is a very simple one. Can you please help?????? |

Maybe you can try: 1. Connect your iPod. If a yellow bubble comes up in the lower right hand corner, click the "x" to close it. 2. Go into iTunes. In the lower right hand corner of the iTunes window, click on the "Display iPod options" button. 3. Down at the bottom of the new window, there should be a "Manually manage songs and playlists" option. Make a note which option is currently selected (we'll want to switch back to it if you want iTunes to manage the songs that are on your iPod). Select it. Click OK and close out of iTunes. 4. You should now be able to access your iPod as though it's a USB hard drive. Open My Computer. Make note of the iPod drive letter (ex: E: ) 5. Click Start and go to Run. In the field, type in "cmd" (no quotation marks, obviously.) 6. At the prompt, type in "chkdsk e: /f" (no quotations, substitute your iPod's drive letter for the E: ) the "/f" switch automatically fixes problems found on the iPod. Depending on your computer's speed, the chkdsk utility should take a minute or two. The utility should display a list of errors on your iPod drive. 7. After the utility finishes and the prompt reappears, type "exit" hit enter and close the window by clicking the "x" in the top right hand corner. 8. If you want iTunes to manage your library automatically, relaunch iTunes and go back into "display iPod options." Reselect the management option that you made a note of in step 3. 9. You may want to have iTunes and the iPod sync so that each knows what's going on with the other. Otherwise, you shouldn't have the bubble pop up again. For me, it was a lost file cluster on the iPod hard drive that caused the corrupt dialogue to appear. Running chkdsk solved this. I didn't have to do an iPod reset, reformat the drive, dump my song collection and start from scratch, or return the iPod. Maybe you will meet the same success I did. Let me know! |

You are right, the solution is simple: Download the free program <a href="http://www.ephpod.com">EphPod</a>. I am not sure off the top of my head, but in one of the menus [probably tools], there is an option to find lost songs. Click that, and it should find most of them, however there will be some that you will have to rename manually. |

I have a similar problem but not sure how it came about. I get a message saying iPod_control\itunes\itunesDB is corrupt and unreadable. I have tried your solution but when I go to Itunes I have no "Display iPod options" button. This is really frustratin any help gratefuly appreciated. chris |

If you eject an iPod from the 'Eject hardware' option in Windows, it will usually 'erase' your iPod. Actually, the iPod Hard Drive directory loses information, making the iPod think it's empty. ALWAYS eject the iPod from iTunes. The eject option appears next to the iPod icon on the left side of itunes (where your playlists and library are) Once ejected from iTunes, the iPod display will show 'Music, Playlists...' etc. and it will be OK to unplug it. NEVER use the Windows 'eject hardware' option for an iPod. |

ReInstall Firmware
From: archonical-ga on 14 Jun 2005 12:36 PDT |
Re Installing the firmware of the iPod Might work, as this flashes the drive and wipes it clean of the "blank" Songs, then re install the .mp3 files and do what "bizarromelt-ga" says, as the "Remove Hardware Safly" Tab in the system tray does wipe removable storage. I tested this with the Creative MuVo MX 256mb for a test, although this appeared to Format the drive, as the unit needed to be "Initilalised" Afterwards ! |
