?The need to quickly implement far-reaching and often complex
strategic change has led many managers and change agents to search for
simple solutions and the one right way? The appealing aspects of the
promise held out for these types of change technologies is that they
can absolve the manager from the onerous task of critically reviewing
the full range of other competing approaches or devising a custom-made
change program. They cut through complexity. However the offer is
often illusory, for particular change approaches usually apply to
particular situations, and simple solutions sometimes ignore the
complexities of real life.? (Stace and Dunphy, 2001, p.5 Beyond the
Boundaries)
Discuss and critically evaluate the relevance and implications of this
statement for change management and the role of managers. Draw on
change management literature to support your position and use at least
two examples of ?simple solutions and the one right way? to illustrate
your arguments.

Wonko some suggested authors but use anything you want:
Stace and Dunphy,2001
Kurt Lewin
Bolman and Deal Reframing Organizations 2003
Burnes, B 2004. Approaches to change mgmt reviewed Behaviourists
(Pavlov) and Gestalt-Field psychologists.
Al Dunlap and Kerry Packers change method was considered to simple and
aggressive in timeframe, their solution was staff cuts. Directors did
not agree believing this could do untold damage to the bank. Al and
Kerry quite the board and Robert Joss CEO was allowed to take a
strategic longer-term approach whilst also achieving some short term
wins and the Bank improved profitability by 300% by 2000. Who knows if
the Dunlap approach would have worked?? The Dunlap?s approach was
successful at Scott Paper in the US (largest producer of consumer
tissues in the world was turned around in 2 yrs), however Dunlap
bankrupted Sunbeam. Simple solutions and one right way does not work
in every case. It is a boom or bust method.
I strongly believe every change task is different, has unknown
complexities and simple solutions or one right way is very risky and
sooner rather than later will lead to failure. Wonko you may see it
differently and want to argue the opposite. If you are taking on this
task for me then argue the way you feel comfortable as long as the
question is covered adequately. Thanks.
Important that you let me know if you are taking on the task ASAP and
then if you could complete within 5 days approx.
Thanks
