Also, look at http://www.macobserver.com/editorial/2003/08/29.1.shtml
for a slightly more up-to-date take on the Mac virus situation. In
short: if you use OS X and don't use Microsoft Word, right now there
is no virus that can affect you.

In all the years that I have had a mac, which I have had mac for a
long time, I have never have had a virus. But I keep a virus scanner
on my computer just in case. I use Virex from Macafee. But other than
that, if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much. People just don't
think that it is worth their time to make a virus for mac, when they
could hurt so many more people if they create a virus for Windows.

I have Mac and it is a good virus protection unit, its not really the
security system that protects your computer, its you. Let me explain.
The protection of your computer is 50-50. The first half of the
protection depends on what websites you visit. Macintosh anti-virus
"WILL NOT" block viruses from pornograghic sites. The second half of
the protection is a must have. You must have a "GOOD" pop-up blocker
and anti-spam mail. If you want a good yet cheap pop-up blocker and
anti-spam mail, I recomend Windows security. However, if your going
for the top of the line security, I highly recomend McAfee Anti-spam
and pop-up blocker.

First off, there are no viruses in the wild at the moment that are
written for the Macintosh platform directly. Second, if you use a
modern version of Microsoft word that blocks Macros from functioning,
you should have OK protection against Word Macro viruses as well.

In RE to the comment above about Porno sites having viruses that can
affect Macs. I believe the user was referring to Spyware; as there,
again, are NO viruses on the Macintosh platform PERIOD. So even if
you visit 100 porno sites per day on your Mac, there will be no
viruses that can affect you from them - at the moment. As far as I
know, there are no Spyware or worms for the Mac either.

This all may change at some point in the future, but at the moment the
threat matrix against Macs is decidedly less dangerous.
