Question ID: 52333
I am looking for a listing of the Top Mass Merchandiser
(Discount)Stores/Chains in Europe overall as well as a breakdown of
the Top 5 stores for each of the following countries: Germany, France,
Italy & the U.K. Need listings to be ranked by sales.

Clarification of Question by love2research-ga on 09 Aug 2002 13:41 PDT
To clarify the question being asked. I am looking more specifically
for "just Discount" stores. I know theses stores have a wider variety,
like Wal-Mart's that do a little bit of everything, that is fine. I
just want to know if there is more specific information out there on
just Discount/General Merchandise Stores, without Grocery stores
lumped in to the group. I have the Top 200 Global Retailers listing
already, but would like the sale ranking to be by Discount/General
Merchandise specifically not for what I company does "overall."
Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions regarding
the request. Thanks.

Sorry,

Dear Love2Research,

I've been able to find Discount/Department Retail stores in Europe,
such as GALEC Leclerc (sales $25b), ITM Entreprises SA (sales $22b),
and Fonciere Euris SA (sales = $18b). I have the sales figures for
all top stores, however, I am not certain that these sales figures
include other things such as food --unless these are under a
subsidiary (such as Socamil, Kermene, and Scamark for GALEC Leclerc).

Let me know if such information would satisfy your request.

Dear love2research:

Seedy-ga pointed out that these figures do not break down the sales
revenue by country. I realize now that you probably wanted the rank by
sales within a single country. I have written to ask the Google to
pull all my answers, if they have not done so already by the time you
read this. I have found reports that can answer your question,
unfortunately they ask a couple of hundred Euros altogether, so I'll
just point them your way:

Best Regards,
blader-ga

PS. If Google has already pulled my answer by the time you read this,
just ask and I'll post my original answer as a comment.

This may be the information that you need, but please note that there
are some grocery stores amongst the answers. Also, this seems to be a
list of the company names rather than the actual name of the store.
For example, "Aldi Einkauf" is a no-frills grocery store known as
"Aldi".

Hi alex_p,

Aldi is actually the largest Discounter in Europe and the company name
is Aldi - stores don't have different names. Aldi Einkauf is just the
buying department/subcompany of Aldi. The company Aldi is divided in
two practically seperate business entities called Aldi North and Aldi
South, controlled by the two Albrecht brothers. These two companies
again are made up of dozens of regional companies.

Aldi was probably the only store mentioned in the original list that
is a 100% Discounter.
