Is there anything I can do to improve the reception on AM stations in
my car radio, that is relatively inexpensive? If so, what?

AM signals are notorious for having limited coverage areas and there's
not a lot one can do if the signal isn't powerful enough to reach you.
However, JC Whitney, a reputable automotive parts company of
international fame, markets a signal booster that may help you. I
cannot speak for it personally but considering that it is from JC
Whitney it looks like it may be your only hope.

Please let me know if this will suffice as an answer.

This may be a better link. The booster is $9.99.

"Give your antenna 3 times more power! Compact booster increases
signal strength, so you receive more stations without signal fade.
Plugs easily into all antenna cables. For all 12-volt systems."

My problem is that my favorite station goes out when I drive next to a
rapid-transit train or station, and at other times though less
seriously. Is that what "signal fade" would be referring to, and would
this product take care of that?

Honestly it's hard to tell if the product will help improve your
situation or not since we have no way of knowing the cause. Signal
fade is indeed the problem when one experiences the "in and out" of
the signal or perhaps an "up and down" volume in certain areas. As for
the train, that could also be caused by an electrical disturbance or a
conflicting radio signal.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone can guarantee that the JC Whitney
product will work, but JC Whitney itself may be willing to make a
money-back guarantee in the event that it doesn't work.

Sorry - it seems the best I can do under the circumstances.
