Hi robertgoard:

Thanks for the question.

To answer your question, I went straight to the source - the National
Association of Enrolled Agents.

All About EAs
URL: http://www.naea.org/tax-abouteas.cfm
Quote: "Are EAs required to take continuing professional education?
In addition to the stringent testing and application process, EAs are
required to complete 72 hours of continuing professional education,
reported every three years, to maintain their status. Because of the
difficulty in becoming an Enrolled Agent and keeping up the required
credentials, there are fewer than 35,000 active EAs in the United
States."

At another, older site, I found the following:

What are Enrolled Agents?
URL: http://www.nc-sea.org/what_are_eas.php#6
Quote: "Because of the difficulty in becoming an Enrolled Agent and
keeping up the required credentials, there are approximately 30,000
active EAs in the United States."

This would mean that the number of EAs is somewhere between 30,000 and
35,000. I'm sure the number fluctuates daily. These were the most
accurate figures that I could come up with.

Search Strategy (on Google):
* "Enrolled Agents" tax
* "Enrolled Agents" tax "in the united states"
* "Enrolled Agents" site:.irs.gov

I hope this helps!

Really would have liked a number from the IRS or Treasury but this
estimate helps.  Thanks
