Question ID: 524122
I would like to know about this oil painting I have that is on wood.
It is a painting of a Forest Fire, in fact on the back it has written
"The Forest Fire". Now under that I think it says T.O. Miller but
there are some other letters too. It could be Yoxcy or Toxcy Miller.
On the front in the right corner it has T.O. Miller and Miller again
with something before it. It has been painted on a piece of redwood
that has been stained dark brown and it is 19" X 11". My aunt who
lived in the early 1900's and died in 1927, painted a lot. We have a
painting that is huge, maybe 6' X 5' and it is a copy of this
painting. I think she(my aunt) traveled to Yosemite with my
grandfather, bought this and copied it in the huge form. This is one
of many paintings I found at my mother's, the Law paintings I sold and
now I have 4 interesting unknown artists that I need information
about. Thank you

Howdy bobbie41-ga,

The Edan Milton Hughes/Hughes Publishing web site has some information on
your artist, Thomas Oxley Miller.
http://www.edanhughes.com/biography.cfm?ArtistID=451

"Thomas Oxley Miller (1854-1909) was born in Columbia, CA on June 4, 1854.
While growing up in the Mother Lode country, he developed a great love of
nature. Inspired by the beauty of Yosemite and the surrounding area, at age
twenty he decided to become an artist."

You should read the rest of that biography for more details.

From the same web site, some examples of Mr. Miller's artwork.

"Classical Greek Maiden"
http://www.edanhughes.com/detail.cfm?ArtworkID=2563

"Oil on Canvas - 18" x 36" - $8,800"

"Red Carnations"
http://www.edanhughes.com/detail.cfm?ArtworkID=1953

"Oil on Board - 7" x 15" - $1,100"

It appears that Mr. Hughes collects pieces such as yours.

"I am currently purchasing paintings by artists of early California. I
have been involved with this genre for 45 years and am able to offer you
the fairest price."

Here is an auction price for one of his works, as sold by Hendrik Sharples.

"Oxley Miller painting, Sierra Landscape, circa 1905 (estate sale) $5000"

The "Live Auctioneers" web site has another of his works, "After the Storm."

"oil on canvas, framed signed: lower left, T. Miller 18 x 32 inches
Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000"

The CaliforniaArt web site has more on Mr. Miller.
http://www.californiaart.com/03-03.html

"Oxley Miller began his artistic career in 1871 when he entered the Hopkins
Art Institute in San Francisco. There he met William Keith, teacher. The two
men became good friends and occasionally went on sketching trips together.
...
In 1895 he married one of his students, Anita Galgiani, a talented artist in
her own right. During his career, Oxley Miller painted a range of subject
matter including flower paintings, still lifes, and history paintings. Like
Keith, however, his real passion was landscape."

More details appear on the above site as well, so you might want to check out
the original web page.

Another one of his pieces, this from the Athenaeum web site.

"Height: 101.6 cm (40 in.), Width: 172.72 cm (68 in.) ... oil on canvas"

The AskART web site might have more than the above, but it will cost you
to find out. They do show one of his works on this page.
