I would like to know how to set up a blog website for my friends and I to write blogs about various topics. I have the domain name and server space, all I need to know are what types of programming methods are needed and the complexity involved to create this type of website. I would most like to create the type of blog where users post messages, not necessarily like Blogger where users have their own web space. Although information on creating that type of website would be appreciated as well. I am moderately skilled in relatively simple applications of common programming languages, but prefer to use asp.net technology. If you could give me a generally good idea of where to start or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated! | |

Drupal http://www.drupal.org is an excellent source for software that is free and very easy to set-up and administer. There are lots of good add-on modules that you can use to help your users. At its base it is excellent for mulitple authors to contribute to a project like blogs. |

Also, there are tools such as wordpress which allow you to post blogs on your own site. (Requires PHP/MySQL). |

Hello, As far as nuts and bolts go, you'll definately need MySQL. This is a database system that will allow you to store all of your users, passwords, posts, etc. securely on your server. The generally accepted language for working with MySQL is PHP. I highly suggest "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" at http://www.sitepoint.com/books/phpmysql1/ . This contains all the information you need, but I wonder what your current web/programming experience includes. If you are not familiar with at least html and scripting, this would be a very large step and I would suggest a canned (pre-made) program. Sam |
