How do I get a complete copy of the federal tax code and the
California Tax code?  How tall is it when it is piled high?
How can I get a itemized listing of all the different taxes in
California and Federal?  Is there a book been written on this?

I am running for elected office and want to use a tactic of exposing
the enormous size of the Code, the incredible amount of different ways
we are taxed and the obsurdity of it all.  Every thing we do, touch,
wear, eat, drive is taxed and taxed.   How do I get a comprehensive
list.  This information will be used in a speech or in a written piece
on my negitive position on raising taxes and how out-of-control we
are.

For the federal code, if you were to assume 12 point Courier New font,
with 1 inch margins, then the 24 megabyte file (rounded; approximately
24,000,000 characters long) would be about 7,979 pages on 8.5" x 11"
paper.  7,979 pages of regular 20 lb paper stacked is about 30 inches,
or about 2.5 feet.  This would include all of the beginning table of
contents information.

For the California Code, if you were to print out the Sales and Use
Tax Regulations file, at 558 pages, you'd be looking at somewhere
around 2 inches high for 20 lb., 8.5" x 11" paper.

It provides the titles of each section in the federal code.  Each
section talks about a different kind of tax.

Similarly, the table of contents at this link should show you the

Since your planning to run for office, and I don't know who you are, 
I don't know if I should really help you...but...here's an idea you'll
love, if you can afford it.

Invest about $1,000 in the complete LOOSELEAF tax code books
http://tax.cchgroup.com/Store/Products/CCE-CCH-13.htm?cs_catalog=TADS

Call CCH for a complete description of this product. 
This is the stuff you see in tax and law offices that covers
the entire wall. A dozen or more heavy volumes.

Get a wheelbarrow and fill it with these books and 
push them on stage, or have a assistant or two do it.

You can make quite a production of how weighty they are. 

You can probably get used/prior year books cheaply from 
offices who no longer use them, since we all get our
data on CD these days. 

CCH has a Calif looseleaf service. 

And yes, if I had caught this question, I'd have
given you a long list of California taxes.
It might have been fun to create the list.
But another way you can look impressive is to get
your hands on a copy of California's Package X - 
which is just the book of forms to photocopy. 
It weighs about two pounds and sits about 2 inches high.
And there is a looseleaf version of that, too.
