I'd like to reference an article in "Reader's Digest" about 3 years
ago with a story of a CEO of an IT firm who successfully fought
cancer. All I remember is that the CEO was in overall goog physical
condition and used to workout regularly. My searches on google did not
turn up the reference. I need
that to help a friend fighting cancer.

Hello tinypatient-ga,

Are you thinking of Andy Grove? He has been very open about his bout
with prostate cancer.

Andrew S. Grove is Senior Advisor to Executive Management. Previously
Grove was Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation from May 1997 to
May 2005. From 1987 to 1998 he served as the company?s CEO and from
1979 to 1997 he served as President. Prior to participating in the
founding of Intel in 1968 with Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, he
worked as the Assistant Director of Research and Development for

Thanks, but this was not Andy. Does anyone else come to mind?

Hello tinypatient-ga,

I'm afraid you haven't given me enough to go on. Considering the price
of your question someone will have to remember the article because a
quick search simply doesn't yield any results.

Another cancer survivor CEO who comes to mind is Carol Bartz of
Autodesk. Lance Armstrong is a very inspirational story.

Since your goal is to help a friend fighting cancer it might be more
appropriate to post a question to ask for inspirational cancer
survivor stories.

Best wishes for you and your friend.

Hello again tinypatient-ga,

Could you be thinking of Steve Jobs? He's the famous CEO of an IT
company but the time frame is wrong since he had his bout with cancer
only last year. I thought of your question because of the reporting on
his speech to Stanford graduates yesterday. His story might be
inspirational enough for your purposes.

Good luck.

Dropout Jobs gives Stanford graduation speech

Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs reflected on his career and recent
battle with cancer as part of his commencement speech Sunday at
Stanford University.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life,"
Jobs said, according to an article on Stanford's Web site. "Don't let
the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice."

Memo from Steve Jobs to Apple employees

August 1, 2004 - Earlier today, Reuters reported that Apple CEO Steve
Jobs successfully underwent surgery for a "very rare" type of
pancreatic cancer. The rare form can be cured if treated in time, as
was the case with Jobs. As the CEO will be back on the job in
September, it's unclear whether Jobs will keynote Apple Expo Paris on
August 31.

Dear tinypatient-ga,

Since your question has expired, you may not see this comment, so I'll
just comment briefly that only today I received a reply from a query
I'd sent to Reader's Digest about your question. They gave a
suggestion as to a possible archived article from 2000 that might fit
your criteria. It's about a CEO, healthy, used to working out, etc.,
of a high-tech biotech firm on the West Coast, which was ironically
engaged in cancer research, who did contract and subsequently
successfully fight cancer. If you think this might be your story,
perhaps you could post a new question, and I can give you the
information there.

Best wishes to you and your friend,
Byrd-ga
