Hello armagh-ga,
I have put together an Excel spreadsheet listing all 32 counties in
Ireland and their respective towns. You can find the excel spreadsheet
at: http://pfile.net/gallery/v/Jennifer/Hosted/ireland.xls.html

I have this hosted on my own personal server, so after about a month,
I will be taking the file down. Go to the link mentioned, then click
?download this spreadsheet?.

If this answer requires further explanation, please request
clarification before rating it, and I'll be happy to look into this
further.

HGello,

Do you want JUST towns...

...or cities, parishes, villages, etc.

You said you were told there were over 1000 towns in southern Ireland alone...

Between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, I have 450. But
if I add in parishes, villages, etc for all 32 counties, it MIGHT
reach that 1000 mark.

So, could you tell me where your estimate of about 1000 alone came from?
Please advise.

Hello again

I used the following sites to add to this list:
http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclopedia/L/Li/List_of_towns_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland.htm
http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-towns-in-northern-ireland

http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/ukvillages/ukvillageshome.htm
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/EI/1/
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/towns.htm

Additionally, if you have questions about why some names are repeated
in each county, some are villages, some are towns, some are cities ?
all with the same name in the same county.

Here's the new spreadsheet with 6400 items.

Portstewart is in the County of Derry, not Antrim. And looking at
this spreadsheet, it is included under Derry.

The City of Craigavon includes the towns of Lurgan and Portadown. Also
the county Down contains a large part of the city of Belfast. (Just
feeling in
a picky mood today)
BTW It may help the researcher to give a lower population limit on
what you consider a town (for example should Crossmaglen be on the
list as a town in Armagh) or what about Stewartstown in County Tyrone.

hi mongolia-ga,well there is nothing wrong with feeling a little
prickly, and really i don't want to get anybodys prickly up not when i
am only paying $10.00 for the info, but if the list can be expanded to
enclude even the smaller populated towns i would be greatfull
thanks regards armagh-ga
ps there is no city of craigavon at least not yet.the pipe dream that
one day will be the city of craigavon taking in the towns of
lurgan&portadown began on the 1st april 1967 with 2 houseing
developments called meadowbrook & moylinn in a sector called brownlow
close to lurgan and was to meet an other sector called mandeville
close to portadown and then become the new city of craigavon.

Dear Armagh
I must say I was absolutely facinated by your information about
Craigavon. One definately does learn something new everyday. To think
of all the times I have heard about the "new City" only to learn is is
a mere pipedream.
Regarding your comment about me been "Prickly" I think I actually did
say picky i.e. in the sence of an over exacting , perfectionist , pain
in the ****.

Just to let you know that like yourself I am a mere visitor to GA
asking the odd question and making the odd commment now and again to
confuse the heck out of both questioners alike. Thus it will be our
dear friend Nenna (and not MOI) who will come up with the
comprehensive list of towns in each of the Irish counties.

Dear NENNA

When you have prepared the final excel spreadsheet for Armagh listing towns
in their respective counties, Please insure that CRAIGAVON is NOT
listed for the County of Armagh :-)

Best Regards and have a good day everyone

Craigavon is a borough in Irleand. A borough in British terms simply
means a town having a municipal corporation and certain rights, such
as self-government or a town that sends a representative to
Parliament.

It is true that the identity of a new city never really caught on. The
name 'Craigavon' is today used by locals to refer to the rump of the
housing development between Lurgan and Portadown, but the names of the
old towns stubbornly live on and so does their identity.

Technically, if he is looking for cities, towns & villages, Craigavon
should be included in that database. And seeing as I have looked
online and can identify over 5000 cities, towns & villages within the
32 counties, I think Nenna deserves a big tip if she can come up with
them. Personally, it cause me a headache! LOL
