My grandfather E.T. Wickham -- wickhamstonepark.com -- engraved this quote on
the base of a concrete flagpole near the statue of the Indian Chief Tecumseh:
THEY SAY I WOULD FORSAKE THE FLAG OF MY NATIVE LAND. BUT WOE UNTO THE
FOE OR STRANGER WHOSE SACRILEGIOUS HAND WOULD TOUCH THEE OR ENDANGER
FLAG MY NATIVE LAND
I would like to know the source of this quotation.

It is possible that my grandfather wrote this quote...but it is very doubtful
because he was a tobacco farmer with only a 6th grade education. Other statues
have quotes where he does not attribute a source. For example, he
engraved this quote by Michael Barry on a WW2 statue:
But whether on the scaffold high,
Or in the battle's van,
The fittest place where man can die
Is where he dies for man

There is no answer at this time.

I have found no online references to this quotation that are not
related to the Wickham Stone Park. It seems likely that your
grandfather wrote this verse.
