Dear morningside-ga,
The Boston Herald reported on March 15 2001 that following his team?s
defeat, Shaquille O'Neal said of Paul Pierce "Paul Pierce is the
(expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew
he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce
is the truth."
Its meaning is not clearly stated, but is a comment on his skill as a
basketball player. The Boston Herald web site provides a brief extract
of the article. The original article is available for $3.95 on the
below link.
Boston Herald. Boston, Mass.: Mar 15, 2001. pg. 095
"PHOENIX - It was late after the Celtics' 112-107 loss in Los Angeles
Tuesday and Shaquille O'Neal was still in the Lakers dressing room.
Pulling a reporter aside, he shook his head and said, "Paul Pierce."
Leaning toward the notepad, he said, "Take this down. My name is
Shaquille O'Neal, and Paul Pierce is the (expletive deleted) truth.
Quote me on that, and don't take ..."

The full text of the quote later appeared in the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinal of March 18, 2001.
'Long after the Lakers' victory over Boston last week, O'Neal lingered
in the locker room. He pulled a Boston reporter over and gestured
toward his notepad.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul
Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take
nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play
like this. Paul Pierce is the truth." '

Allsports.net article dated March 29 2001.
'In addition, he scored 42 back-to-back points, one of which was
against the Los Angeles Lakers in which Shaquille O'Neal labelled him
"The Truth."
This is exactly the quote from Shaquille O'Neal: ?I knew he could
play, but I didn't know he could play like this, Pierce is the truth.?

'Boston forward Paul Pierce copyrighted "The Truth," a nickname given
him last year by Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal. "He
should copyright that name," O'Neal said during the NBA Finals. "It's
him. Paul Pierce is the (expletive) Truth." '
