This is a huge subject. I doubt that you'll get an answer at a tiny price.

I'm just looking for a general answer- something that's maybe 3 or 4
paragraphs at most.  That's why I only offered $5; I'm not looking for
the entire history of programming, maybe a bit about some of the most
common programming languages, and their uses.
