Question ID: 525589
Is there an effective way to research old Wall Street Journal
Articles? I know I can use Factiva for archived articles back to 1996,
but what about articles from the early and mid 20th Century? I don't want to
go through the microfiche at a public library - is there any other
way? Thanks!

Factiva carries the WSJ back to 1979, so you can get another decade or
so more than you though from that source.

Beyond that, though, I know of no electronic archive for the WSJ that
covers earlier years. Would a confirmation of this serve as a
suitable answer to your question? If not, how do you suggest we
proceed on this?

LexisNexis covers the WSJ from May 1, 1973 through the present. It is
a rather expensive service, but I would be happy to perform some
searches on it for you if you wish. Please let me know.

adiloren-ga,

Are you certain about Lexis-Nexis?

The portal that I use to access L-N does not include the WSJ (maybe
I'm using the discount version!).

Pat and all --

There are no electronic archives after a certain date, but you are
aware that there's a print index to the Wall Street Journal going back
decades? I didn't check in initially because I can't remember if it's
a Wall Street Journal only source -- or if it was done in the old
Business Periodicals Index -- but there is one available.

Best regards,

Omnivorous-GA

pat221-ga,

Thanks for confirming that the information provided is what you
needed...much appreciated.

For earlier dates, you can consult the print edition of the WSJ index
that is held by many libraries:

Please let me know if there's anything else you need on this topic.
Just post a Request for Clarification if I can help you further, and
I'm at your service.

All the best,

ProQuest Historical Newspapers indexes and provides pdfs of articles
in the Wall Street Journal back to its beginning in 1889. It also
includes NYTimes, Christian Science Monitor, LATimes, and Washington
Post back to original issues. It's easy to use and has a good search
engine. The downside? It's one of those products libraries pay for,
so you'll probably have to find a library.

pafalafa-ga,

Yes, my lexis portal list the WSJ for the dates I referenced. Not sure
why it's different than yours.

Pat,

Definitely check out Proquest- that is a good resource for PDF back
print issues not often caried electronically.
