No doubt I went beyond your additional query into the history of the
movement, but it seemed important to understand the Lubavitchers, and
it appears from recent news articles that both the Lubavitch community
and the Caribbean communities are coming together with reason and
hope. Among good people of any background, reason and hope will
always prevail.

Much material is available on the Internet....with a worldwide
movement, there is no lack of commentary, books and news on the
Lubavitch.
The settlement in Crown Heights is part of the story beginning
beginning in the 1940's as you'll read in various sites listed below.
There is so much more.
West Indian assimilation in connection to the Lubavitch movement?
Once you read of the movement, I think you'll discover that it is
distinct from any problems of assimilation of any group into Crown
Heights whether they be Irish, Turkish or West Indian.
Rev Sharpton made it clear as mentioned below. The reaction caused by
an auto accident in 1991 that led to the murder of a Lubavitcher
headlined the tensions.
15000 Lubavitchers are part of a community....part of Brooklyn...part
of Crown Heights. The American community belongs to all the people.
Any tensions can be relieved reason. And in America, American law
will guarantee that every resident from the West Indies or from
Bavaria or Russia will have equal rights.
It certainly does not appear than any outsiders consider assimilation
with the Lubavitcher community anymore than the latter consider
accepting West Indian culture and beliefs, but living together in
peace, harmony, and understanding should be possible and probable.

1991 New York race riots that occurred after a seven-year-old

EXPLORING ETHNIC NEIGHBORHOODS
In order to enhance our exposure to the multicultural flavor of NYC,
the Office of Multicultural Affairs and College Activities are
sponsoring a series of trips to ethnic enclaves around the city.

Some important rebbes also survived the war and emigrated, with each
forming the center of a new settlement in Brooklyn: the Satmarer and
the Klausenberger in Williamsburg, the Lubavitcher (whose Rebbe
Schneerson actually arrived in New York in 1940) and the Bobover in
Crown Heights. About sixty courts, many of them with fewer than fifty
families, were transplanted to New York. Today there are twelve
