I need to produce a graph in Excel for use in a PowerPoint presentation that displays Ebbinghaus' Curve of Forgetting for the first value and then the effect of regular review on the curve for the second value. The URL for what I would like to duplicate is at http://www.jficm.anzca.edu.au/modules/1_Revision.htm and it is at Figure 3. The actual values for the Ebbinghaus curve, which I also want incorporated are at http://www2.psych.purdue.edu/~ben/285su2001/notes/figures/5-forgettingcurve.htm. |

all you want to do is plot 10 points on a graph and connect it with a nice smooth line in excel? or is it more complicated than that and i just dont see it? if its not then give me a way to send you the excel file and i will. |

Thank you for your comment. There are two difficulties with the graph. The first is the Ebbinghaus' Curve itself. The graph extends over 31 days, but the first data points are crowded into 20 minutes; 1 hour; 9 hours; 1 day; 2 days. The next point is at 6 days and then a final point at 31 days. So I am at a loss as to how to scale the graph so that the 6 data points display in a readable fashion on a PowerPoint slide. The other, and probably larger complication is the review line. If you will take a glance at the second URL you'll see what I mean. You have the Ebbenghaus line and then above it are shorter curves lines that illustrate how review of data helps in memory retention. I don't have a clue as to how you would tell either Excel or Microsoft Graph how to plot that. If I'm complicating something that is really quite simple, please let me know. If you see a way to solve this, I can let you know how to send the file. Again, thanks for you suggestion. |

okay so the data is close at the beginning, and father appart at the end. after looking at the graph i made (i just converted everything to minutes) do you really need to show after 20 days? i mean it is pretty straight after that. in any case you can just have a smooth trendline that should show your case for you. For the second graph, i couldn't find any data points to go by. my first idea would be to graph it as a serries of sepparate lines, so that you could put nice trendlines to make it smooth. |

Rather than doing an x-y plot (since your x values aren't evenly spaced), you could do a line plot. Then use the x values as "x axis labels". |

I agree, I don't need the data after six days. But I'll be danged if I understand how to make the plot. You are dealing with a poor writer here who is remarkably math-ignorant. I still don't understand how to enter the information... |

On the Purdue site, the lables and arrows were put in after the chart was made, probably with text boxes and arrows. |
