I have just removed all the songs from my ipod however the playlists
remain is there any way to remove the playlists from the ipod as well?

The iPod itself doesn't have a feature to delete songs or playlists,
so you need to connect the iPod to your computer and delete the
playlists in iTunes which will update your iPod. Directions are on the
Apple site.
