Question ID: 526579
I need instruction on how to set Tortoise CVS to use FTP for the
CVS_ROOT. I am running Windows 2000, my FTP server a generic thing
that verizion gives with a DSL account (probably meant to serve
webpages).

i cant get Tortoise to connect to my FTP site. Probably i am not
configuring it right. My FTP works (with FileZilla) and Tortoise
works (in local mode). I just cant get it pointed to the FTP server
correctly. Please fill in the blanks below:

To create a new module Tortoise CVS asks for the following
1. Protocol:
????? From the drop down i could pick :ssh:, :server:,
:ntserver:, others...
2. Server:
In FileZilla i log in using: res4g123@ftpmysite.verizon.net
3. Port:
??? probably port 21. Usually this field is blanked out
4. Repository folder:
My FTP folder is called cvs_root (kept at the top level of the cvs dir)
5. User name
Verizon provides a username like res4g123

Answer criteria:
I need to get Tortoise to work with my FTP server (or know that it
doesn't do FTP in the manner i need).

Hi,
Sorry for the tone of the original question - it has the cranky look
of someone who 'cant get the dang thing to work'. Still stumped,
looks like PuTTY might take care of it.

One thing that doesnt work is using a mapped FTP drive in local mode.
Tried using WebDrive, but Tortoise doesnt allow mapped drives for CVS
repositorys.

Thank you for your time, Steve

Hi, Looks like FTP doesn't work for this. If you can make it work i
am still interested and will be happy to pay. In the meantime i am
doing the following:

Name convention:
Local - the files on your pc that you work on
Server - the files on the network

Using Tortoise CVS

**CREATE FOLDER (windows explorer)**
1. Create a server folder for CVSROOT, and one for the new project
(on the network)
	2. Right Click the folder that you wish to backup
	3.  Select cvs->create module
	4. In the module name section pick the name for the project (ie same
as the folder name from step 1).
	5. Make selections in Tortoise such that it shows:
CVSROOT=ssh:cvsuser@yourHost.NET:/thePathToYourCvsFolder.  If you put
this line together and paste it in the cvsroot line the tool will fill
out the form for you.
6. This creates a copy of the files on the server (or pushes files to
the server if the local folder has new files)

**Problems i had**
1. Hard to get CVS root established.
2. Did not have a CVS directory (I thought the Tortoise could make
what it needed)
3. After i made the directory i did not give enough permissions
4. Creating modules failed because there was not a directory with the
module name in the cvs directory.
5. Then CVS commit failed differently because it did not have
permissions to write.
6. Some problems because the cvs users were not part of the 'group'.
Network IS people made this addition later.
