Hello, I am trying to set up my own web server, but I have been unable to see it from outside my house. I will list below my current setup and different things I have tried. I realize some of this will be trial and error. I am willing to pay more money if needed to get the setup working. Server: Win 2003 server with apache router: Linksys BEFW11S4 cable modem: motorola surfboard 5100 cable service armstrong cable I have tried both the DMZ option and the port forwarding on my linksys router. I though maybe my cable service was blocking port 80 so I have also set up apache to listen to 81 and set port 81 to forward to my server as well. For all of the above, I have been able to see my website internally from both 192.XXX and 24.XXX. However, I have never been able to see the site from outside my network. For additional questions or testing, my email is heathlovell@yahoo.com |

Could your ISP be providing you with NAT - which will prevent inbound traffic such as you now want ? |

I don't think so but I am not for sure. When I look at the WAN address on my router, it says 12.144.248.XXX. This is the same address that I get when I go to www.whatismyip.com. How would I know for sure if my ISP is using NAT or not? Heath |

You need to have a Static IP address so that your server can be seen outside of your Local Network. Dr. S. |

So even though I type in 24.144.248.xxx from a web browser, it won't work? My address has been static for about 3 days. Is this not enough time for routing tables, etc. to update? Will one of the services such as tzo, etc. let it work with a dynamic IP? |

Do you have msn messenger? I would be happy to help you. There should be no problem with accessing through dynamic IP addy especially if you're using the addy itself and are not relying on DNS resolution. However, if you wish to use reolution you can do so through dyndns www.dyndns.org. You can get a free account from them and your router probably supports auto updates to them of the IP address (if/when it changes). As for your problem, see if you can find a list at your isp's homepage of ports they filter. It is safe to say they are not using NAT as the WAN IP on your router is a live internet addy. Then review your port forwarding settings in the router and ensure that you have all the necessary correct entries. Try disabling the hardware firewall(temporarily) to help eliminate possibilities. If you like, contact me at wconradjr@cox.net. We can go through the process of enabling remote router management and I will review your settings to make sure they are appropriate. |
