I'm looking for very inexpensive wall-style calendars to cut up for
teaching purposes. I tried to find outdated (2003, 2004, etc.)
calendars, but couldn't find them!
Where can I find calendars:
1) That are under $5. (One calendar here or there won't work -- i.e.
ebay, as shipping would get expensive. I would like to find an online
source that combines shipping or has low shipping.)
2) That are educational (travel - cities or countries, lighthouses,
classic cars, etc.) NOT animals, celebrities, swimsuit/pin-ups,
entertainment (movies, etc.).

Hello jude1-ga,

This was a fun search. I think I?ve found lots of resources to help
you with your projects.

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?price1=0&price2=5.00&btnP=Go&num=100&hl=en&lr=&tab=wf&q=wall+calendar&price=between&scoring=p

Searched for <wall calendar> priced under $5.00. Got 1,290 hits and
some scenic calendars at under $1.00. It looks like you have lots of
choices.

In addition, here are some suggestions for finding calendars and other
sources for good quality pictures for teaching purposes.

Many of the thrift stores in my neighborhood usually have some
outdated wall calendars for about $1-2 each. The selection varies but
the price is great.

Many of the bookstores in my area have outdated calendars for half
price or less. Book Buyers is the best one I've found. They have a
huge selection for VERY low prices. Their website isn't complete so
you should call them to see what kind of deal you could make with
them.

Since you're looking for educational pictures I also suggest buying
used coffee-table picture books. My public library has an ongoing book
sale where they sell such books for $2-3 dollars each. I've also seen
many such books at my local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. I
always feel guilty about cutting up books but they are an excellent
source for high quality pictures.

You could also ask your PTA to have a drive at the end of the calendar
year to collect the calendars for the closing year. You could also
send a note to the parents of the children in your class to ask if
they have suitable calendars or other pictures that they could donate
for your projects.

I also know of an organization in my area that collects donations of
school supplies and then offers teachers the opportunity to ?shop? for
what they need for hands-on instruction. You may be able to find such
an organization in your area as well.

Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT)

Thanks to widespread participation from the community, RAFT is able to
add significant value to donated items and provide teachers and
community groups with creative strategies, practical tools, and
low-cost materials for enhancing their hands-on teaching skills. The
ideas and materials supplied by RAFT enable students to explore
subjects such as math, science, and art through first-hand experience,
bringing educational value to thousands of donated items.

iLoveSchools.com is a free matchmaking service ? for education! School
teachers request materials and supplies while potential donors search
for a teacher in need of their gifts of money or, new and used goods.

Good luck for finding the supplies you need.

Dear CZH,
The first link is the sort of link I'm looking for -- something online
that I can click and buy. The problem is that the listings on Froogle
are for promotional calendars -- in other words, you have to buy 150
of them to get that .99 price. I need a site that sells outdated
calendars for the average customer.

Dear jude1-ga,

You didn't say anything about the quantitites of calendars you needed
in your original request and neither did you mention your budget. You
said you were willing to pay up to $5 each. It seems to me that buying
10 calendars for $50 vs. 150 for $150 would be a better deal. Maybe
you could pool your resources with other teachers in the same boat
with you.

I also know that the Book Buyers (the store I named) has calendars
very cheap and I'm sure you could negotiate a good deal with them. If
you're interested in buying small quantitites of calendars your best
bet is to go to bookstores and find them one at a time. In addition, I
also gave you several other suggestions for getting high quality
images cheaply but I don't have any idea why you don't think these
options are suitable. I'd love to help you but I need to know more
about your situation and why you think the solutions I offered won't
work. Tell me more.

I am one parent, working alone. I'm not looking to join a group or
form an association, rather I'm looking to purchase several calendars
inexpensively for personal teaching use.

I'm looking to purchase calendars as opposed to coffee table books
because they are a subject with 12 very large, high resolution
pictures that are perfectly sized for me.

I am doing the Glenn Doman method, Encyclopedic Knowledge Program
(www.iahp.org) which organizes subjects into small groups of of 10 -
12. The calendars do this perfectly for me.

Being pregnant with a small toddler in tow doesn't easily permit
shopping around at bookstores, which is why I would like the sources
to be online.

Hope that helps!

Hi again,
What I am looking for is a source for several, like a dollar store I
would imagine. In my original question I had stated: "(One calendar
here or there won't work -- i.e. ebay, as shipping would get
expensive. I would like to find an online source that combines
shipping or has low shipping.)" -Jude

Dear jude1-ga,

I'm totally mystified about your needs. I gave you suggestions for
buying in quantity and you said that's no good. I found you sources
for buying in whatever quantity you like and you say that's also no
good. To try to resolve what, exactly, you need please answer my prior
clarification request about the quantities you need, your budget and
timetable.

How many calendars do you want to buy per year?
What is your budget for buying calendars per year?
Where do you live or what are the geographic limits for buying locally?
What is your schedule for buying? (At the beginning of the school
year? At the beginning of the calendar year? On a regular schedule?)

I've already provided you with lots of options and I'm afraid there is
nothing further I can do unless I get a better understanding of what
you're trying to do.

Ok, I will try again:

1) Online source (not a local bookstore, etc.)
2) Several calendars at one website to save on shipping (not one here
or one there like on ebay). It should not be a website that is all
about one subject, as I don't need several calendars about one subject
(i.e. a horse website).
3) Educational subjects for children (not celebrities, entertainment,
swimsuit, etc.)
4) I am looking to buy several calendars, one of each type (not 150 of
the same calendar!).
5) I am ideally looking for an outdated/sale/discount online calendar store.

Hope that helps. I don't know how much more specific I can be.

Dear jude1-ga,

I'm afraid your clarification does not answer my questions from my
last clarification request. Please give me this additional
information.

1) How many calendars do you want to buy per year?
(What quantity is "several"?)

2) What is your budget for buying calendars per year?
(I've given you a broad range of prices already. I can't do any more
unless I know your budget.)

3) Where do you live or what are the geographic limits for buying locally?
(I've exhausted the online sources. It might be able to find local
stores who would be willing to handle your request.)

4) What is your schedule for buying? (At the beginning of the school
year? At the beginning of the calendar year? On a regular schedule?)
The availability of discounted/discontinued/sale calendars varies
greatly depending on time of year.

I cannot take this any further with your most recent clarification. Thanks.

1) How many calendars do you want to buy per year?
(What quantity is "several"?)

Around 25 - 30 calendars.

2) What is your budget for buying calendars per year?
(I've given you a broad range of prices already. I can't do any more
unless I know your budget.)

$5 per calendar, so max of $150 plus minimal shipping (that's why I
want to find only one or two online sources, to save on shipping -- so
ebay auctions won't work!).

3) Where do you live or what are the geographic limits for buying locally?
(I've exhausted the online sources. It might be able to find local
stores who would be willing to handle your request.)

I've said this already -- I am pregnant with a small toddler. It is
simply too hard to hunt down bookstores by foot; this is why I
requested an online source.

4) What is your schedule for buying? (At the beginning of the school
year? At the beginning of the calendar year? On a regular schedule?)
The availability of discounted/discontinued/sale calendars varies
greatly depending on time of year.

There's not really a schedule. If the source has 25 - 30 unique and
wonderful calendars all at once, I can buy all at once. If they get
shipments a few times a year, I'll buy like that.

Hello again jude1-ga,

Thank you for the clarification. That helps a lot. I think I have a
lead on source that might meet all your needs. Please tell me where
you're located (town or Zip Code) so I can figure out the likely
shipping charges. Thanks.

More soon.

Hello again jude1-ga,

I?ve found a place for buying out of date calendars that should meet
all your criteria. It is the bookstore I told you about in my original
answer.

Book Buyers
317 Castro St.
Mountain View, CA 94041
(650) 968-7323
contact: Richard Salva
email: info@bookbuyers.com
web site: http://www.bookbuyers.com/

I visited the Book Buyers store today and confirmed that they still
have a large stock of very low priced out of date calendars. You can
get 2004 calendars for $1.99 each or 3 for $5.00. They sell 2003 or
earlier calendars for $.99 each or 6 for $5.00. Their selection
includes many subjects that would be suitable for teaching, including:
scenics (cities, regions, countries), animals, insects, birds, cars,
airplanes, trains, heavy equipment, fine arts, cartoons, sports
activities, home and garden, architecture, flowers, trees, gardens,
and religious and inspirational.

I talked to Carol and she said they would be happy to help you. It is
best to call Tuesday or Wednesday (650-968-7323) and tell whoever
answers the phone that Carol talked to your friend and gave her OK for
processing the order. When you call explain the types of calendars you
want and they will choose whatever seems appropriate to meet your
needs.

The cost will be the price of the calendars plus $5.00 handling and
whatever it costs for the shipping. She said she thought 25-30
calendars might fit into a priority mail box that would cost $9.00.
She said they would give you exact figures after they had your
calendar selections ready.

This is a wonderful used book store. They have current calendars for
half price and have a large selection of older calendars for the
prices I?ve quoted year round.

I shop at this store regularly and I?ve always found them very
helpful. I?m sure they will be able to assist you with whatever you
need.

Best wishes for your projects and for your toddler and little one on the way.
