I am interested in a complete alphabetical listing of all colleges and
universities in the United States (meaning post secondary educational
institutions - beyond K to 12). I require that the list includes the
following columns within the information: school name, address, city,
state, county, phone number, # of buildings and campus population (#
of students). I would suspect that the list should be approximately
2000-3000 records in length and be no later than 2004 data. Ideally
this information will be able to be extracted into excel. |

Getting a list of all colleges in the US is probably do-able, but I
see two problems with your request:
1. Not all data elements you asked for are likely to be available,
especially number of buildings, and perhaps county as well.
2. Downloading the entire dataset of colleges and putting it into a
format so that you can easily import it to Excel is more than a $10
task (I'd say closer to $50, though other researchers may differ with
me on this). However, we can certainly point you towards existing
databases, so you can do the extractions and downloading on your own.
Let me know your thoughts on this.

other information would be mandatory.

It's turning out to be tougher than I anticipated putting all the pieces together.
I finally found a database that I put into Excel. It lists about
7,000 colleges (including a ton of vocational schools). But the
enrollment data is a bit strange...it only shows enrollment for the
entering class (i.e., the number of NEW students coming in), and even
that is only available at some schools.
The records (which will have wierd line breaks here) look like this:

The last number in each record is the new enrollment...a -1 indicates missing data.

If I understand the information that you have found - it covers the
following: school name, address, city, state, phone number, and an
attendance # for the new students starting that year (would assume
that the amount of missing enrollment information is less than 10%).
Given that this information is newer than 2004 I would say that you
have answered my original information request.
