I am looking for an article that discusses the traffic problems in New
York city. Specifically the problem of cars driving around trying to
find a parking place. The article said that a study showed that (?)%
of the drivers were not going to point A to point B, but were actually
circling around just to find a parking place. The article may have
appeared in any publication, but most likely the Wall Street Journal,
New York Times or some other prestigious publication. I would like to
locate this article. Please provide a citation or a link. |

Hi Santabarbara!
An article from the Boston Globe states that " a 1999 Department of
Transportation study that suggested more than 50 percent of the
traffic in a typical downtown is on the road searching for a parking
space."

Hello Bobbie. The Department of Transportation article was probably
the study that the article I am looking for cited. But the Boston
Globe article you cited is not the article that I saw. It was a much
more detailed article about the problems. Could you search further?

The article "Parking" by Gail Robinson published in the Gotham Gazette on
April 11, 2005 discusses New York City parking problems, however it
doesn't mention the percentage of drivers that are searching for a
parking space.

Not the article but an interesting tidbit of information:
"Surveys indicate that 8-74% of urban traffic congestion is caused by
vehicles cruising for on-street parking, and motorists spend an
average of 3.5 to 13.9 minutes finding a curb parking space, both
indications of inefficiency due to underpricing (Shoup, 2004)"

Santabarbara,
Perhaps this is the article:

"In much of the country, free or at least cheap parking is a God-given
right. But not in New York."
