All of a sudden for some reason I can't access non https:// sites, as
in google.com, etc. Https:// sites such as google answers, email, etc.
work fine. I'm working on a personal wireless network run by someone
else - any thoughts on how to fix this? I also am running Norton
Internet Security but disabling that changes nothing. Disabling and
re-enabling the internet connection does nothing either. Is there some
way to route everything through a https so that I can access non-http
sites? Or is there some way to fix this in general?

Thanks!

Ok, it turns out that it definitely has something to do with Norton
Internet Security - I disabled all the related startup programs in
msconfig.exe (start menu->run->msconfig.exe), and then restarted. This
made sure that NIS was *completely* off (not just disabled) and all
sites worked fine. Since I would like to have NIS working all the time
but not have this pointless http block, I just reinstalled NIS. Doing
that right now. If you know exactly how to make sure that NIS doesn't
do this again, I'd appreciate it, otherwise I think the problem is
solved. Thanks!

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, have a look at your
Internet security options.

From the IE menu go to Tools > Internet Options
Select the Security Tab and then click the Trusted Sites icon to view
the settings. Click on the Sites button to view the sites that are in
the trusted zone. There is a checkbox here that requires all sites
listed in the zone to be viewed with server verification (Https). If
unticking this box allows you to use Http then it may mean your
internet security settings may need adjusting, or have been affected
by Norton Internet Security.

Be careful if you are playing around with these security settings
because you can leave your PC wide open security breaches if you set
things too low.

Your Internet Explorer may be infected. Download Firefox from
http://www.getfirefox.com and try it from there.
