I'm looking for detailed statistics concerning Asian American women
victims of sex crimes and/or abuse. Crimes may include but don't
necessarily have to be limited to rape, sexual abuse, or domestic
violence. I'm particularly interested in data that includes the race
or ethnic background of the attacker. If national data can't be found
for the United States, data for smaller locales with high
concentrations of Asian Americans will be acceptable. For example,
statewide data for California or Hawaii, or even city data for cities
such as San Francisco or Honolulu.

Information presented in a clear and easily readable format is
preferred. I don't have any statistical software, so downloadable
files meant to be read in such programs are out of the question. I'm
more interested in aggregate numbers and not individual interviews or
case studies. If no online resources can be found, information
pointing the way to offline resources may be acceptable.

The following information comes from a 2001 report of the U.S. Justice
Department, available as a set of spreadsheets in ZIP format at
(http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/vvr98.htm).

An average of 8,150 Asian Americans a year were victims of sexual
assault or rape between 1993 and 1998. That is a rate of 1.2 per 1,000
people, compared to 1.8 for whites, 2.2 for blacks and 5.8 for
American Indians.

The rate of rape and sexual assault victims per 1,000 Asian American
*women* was 1.8 per 1,000 people. For Asian American men, it was 0.5
per 1,000.

Of 178,880 Asian American victims of violent crime in the 6-year study
period, 35 percent identified their attacker as white, 26 percent as
black, 30 percent as "other" (presumably including Asian), 3 percent
as mixed-race and 6 percent as unknown. The report does not break down
that chart by type of crime; however, the person listed as a contact
may be able to get that for you.

Eleven percent of violent crimes committed against Asian Americans
occured in the home, compared to 14 percent for whites, 18 percent for
blacks and 15 percent for Native Americans. Again, there is no
breakdown for type of violent crime.

If you need anything else, please let me know with a request for
clarification. I hope this answer meets your needs.

I was looking more for statistics or studies specifically targeting
Asian American women, instead of a large set of data for all groups.
Do some more searches and see what you can find. Also look for state
and local data as I suggested above.

Perhaps you would be interested in the Asian Task Force Against
Domestic Violence's Asian Family Violence Report, available at
(www.atask.org/AFVrepfinal.pdf). It is a survey of experiences and
attitudes regegarding domestic violence among Asian Americans in
Massachusetts.

There is also the Family Violence Prevention Fund's book (Un)heard
Voices: Domestic Violence in the Asian American Community." You can
purchase it at (shop.store.yahoo.com/fvpfstore/unvoicdomvio.html).

You can also take a look at the Asian Pacific Islander Domestic
Violence Resource Project at (www.dvrp.org) or the Asian & Pacific
Islander Institute on Domestic Violence at (www.apiahf.org).

I was unable to find anything on Asian Americans and sexual assault
that did not reference the Uniform Crime Reports statistics I cited in
the first answer. The Bureau of Justice Statistics may be able to
break the statistics on Asian Americans and sex crimes into further
detail for you.

BTW, I looked up the Hawaii and California governments' crime
statistics, but they do not break down reported sex crimes by race of
the victim.

Fairly adequate answer given the online resources available.
