Question ID: 529176
I am Beginning to research a business idea and need a basic question
answered. If one were to order 100,000 to 1,000,000 medium size moving
boxes, what price should I expect to pay for the boxes? The Retail
price ranges between $1.00 per box on the internet, $1.49 at home depot, up to
$2.00 at the local box store. The wholesale prices I have located on
the internet are not relevent as they are marketed toward someone who
wants to buy 100 to 1000 boxes and are generally at a 10% discount.
My Guesstimate is that as one approaches buying 1,000,000 boxes the
price per box is in the .15 - .20 cent range. Any help in pinpointing a price
range would be helpfull. Thanks

Hi jerry4321,

I'd be surprised if you find prices quoted online for such a large
purchase, especially given that there are so many variables in the
industry (box size and box strength) - see the chart at the following
link.

UPS BOX STRENGTH GUIDELINES

That said, I did manage to find one website, United Container, which
lists prices per bale. Unfortunately, the most the matrix will accept
is 100 bales for any given size box, but it will give you a better
idea of pricing for bulk purchasing.

For example, given a box dimension of 18 x 10 x 8 @ 500 boxes per
bale, the price is .45 per box whether you buy 5,000 or 50,000 boxes.
I would imagine that you would be able to negotiate a better price
per truckload.

1 - 3 bales: $0.51 (each box)
4 - 6 bales: $0.49 (each box)
7 - 9 bales: $0.47 (each box)
10+ bales: $0.45 (each box)

18 x 10 x 6 - 500 Boxes per Bale 100 $210.00 $21000.00 = .42
per box (50,000 boxes)
18 x 10 x 8 - 500 Boxes per Bale 100 $225.00 $22500.00 = .45
per box (50,000 boxes)
18 x 18 x 12 - 240 Boxes per Bale 100 $207.60 $20760.00 = .86
per box (24,000 boxes)

Design Tools for Corrugated Board Containers
"Corrugated boards, are manufactured from two forms of containerboard:
flat sheets of paper called liner and corrugated sheets of paper
called medium. The most common structural corrugated board
configuration is single wall, manufactured using one layer of
corrugated medium glued between two liners. Single wall corrugated
board is used in 80% of corrugated box production. The "Flute" defines
the structure of the wave-shaped layer. The flutes make the board
extremely stiff to bend and stable against buckling in relation to its
weight. Consequently, the strength of the material, supplied by the
wood fibres can be used very efficiently."
