I'd like to auction an item using the web - with on-line bidding like eBay.
However, I do not want the auction to be public. I would like to
provide a password to several hundred of my clients, so they can enter
the auction and participate. But it's important that this is not an
auction that's open to the general public.
Does any auction site offer such a service? Or can some other solution
be suggested. I need something that is relatively turn-key and as
inexpensive as possible. |

Hi gbwez1,
On eBay, you can restrict an auction to a list of pre-approved
bidders. A buyer would have to be a member of eBay to bid, though.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-preapproved.html
The auction would be visible to the public, but only pre-approved
bidders would be able to bid.
Would this meet your need?

Sorry, but I'm aware of this eBay option but it does not suit my
needs. The auction, which I wish to take place out of the public eye,
would be picked up like any other through eBay's search mechanisms.
I'm looking for a private auction tool - i.e. one the public would
never know about unless I supplied a password to view it.

Hello gbwez1-ga,
I have found 2 companies that will help you to set up your own auction
site that will let you host private, password protected auctions, and
you can keep your auctions out of the search engines by adding
meta-tags to your program and webpages to keep it out of most, if not
all search engines. Would this work for you as an answer?
