I've been looking everywhere and on internet for how to find/look for jobs, or job postings, for english literature graduate students in Montrea(canada) but I could only find job postings located in the United States or in Tononto. Where can I look for or find job listings in the movie industry, book industry,and/or writing industry here in Montreal(canada)for a part time or full time job? I'm talking about any kind of jobs concerning english literature students such as editing, writing, researching (especially researching), research assistants, etc. It is not, for exemple, as if publishing houses posted jobs openely, so it's very hard to know where to look for them and find them. Also, and more specifically, where can I look for/find job listings concerning medieval literature graduate students? Here also, jobs for them are not openely posted. I've been regularly checking my university postings and so far there is nothing helpful on that side. Thanks for your help! |

Hi medieval_scholar, Here are a couple of links you might find useful: http://www.academiccareers.com/Applicants.htm http://www.cmpa.ca/index.cfm/ci_id/1300/la_id/1.htm In research your best bet, to work in an academic setting where most literary research would occur, would be to continue in a university through your doctorate and then work as a full professor. Most research assistants that I've seen in university are pulled from graduate students, since graduate students need to support themselves while they're in school. For a publishing house, it would be difficult unless you have preexisting industry connections in Montreal (and if you did I think you wouldn't be posting this question) to stay where you are. In the US the most common advice for those wanting to work in the business is to uproot yourself and go to New York City and start hitting the pavement. It's a hard life in the beginning because the pay is lousy, but that's where all the publishing houses and literary agencies are based, so that's where you get your foot in the door. If you want to write nonfiction, your best bet would be to pursue local journalism opportunities -- pick up a copyediting job from a local paper and go from there, working your way up the editing chain. In any of these cases, it's probably a good idea to target what kind of work you want to do, and then decide what you're willing to do to work in that job (ie relocate, starve, etc). Good luck! |

Hi gryphoness, Thank you for your helpful comments. They're very appreciated. I think I forgot to mention that I'm going to start my doctoral studies in january 2006. Now I'm finishing my MA. I was just trying to find a job that would help me make some money until I actully reach my Ph.D. But thanks anyway! Your comments were very helpful!! |
