I am sharing my external hard drive plugged into my laptop (Dell
Inspiron 9100 with Windows XP). The problem is when it is idle, it
automatically goes into "standby", thus others in the network can't
access my external hard drive. I already mess around with the settings
in Power Management but with no avail. What could I do to prevent my
laptop going into standby mode?

Hi il21loo,

Have you tried going into Power Options in your Control Panel?

In System standby, click the time you want. Alternatively click Never.

Please let me know if this works.

Best regards,
Rainbow

Answer for Question ID: 530460

For il21loo-ga ,

You have the options to disable or enable the System Standby and Hibernate mode.

Solution to Disable System Standby:

1.Right Click on Desktop, then left click on Properties.
2.In the New window, click on the Screensaver Tab.
3. You can also disable the screensaver there..below you will find the
"Power" button, click on it... there you will find the Options for
System Standby and Hibernate.
4. In the Dropdown box, select Never.
5.Click ok.

There you go.... Problem Solved :)

If the other two suggestions don't work go to the Start Menu -> All
Programs -> Dell Quickset
This is a utility provided by Dell to setup the power options,
slightly different user interface but it should over write the system
settings.

On the fourth screen you'll need to "Edit Scheme" provided by the Dell
or create a new one, specifically the "System Suspend" "Timeout to
hibernate" options, set them both to Never.

If all this answer can not fix your problem, you should go into the
BIOS menu to check the power management of the system or harddrive
standby options.

Usually you press F2 or F10 key just before the computer startup(you
can see this on startup screen), you can go into the BIOS menu.

Try entering into the laptop's setup (also called ROM bias) by pushing
on the proper key when the screen displays the option (usually the
DELETE key). In the setup should be a section on power management.
Thae hardware settings may be overriding the software settings.
Let me know if you need more help getting into the setup.
